Wireless or Wired Lav for weddings?

Not for this wedding but the ones coming up I plan on having 3 wireless or wired lavs in addition to my microphone will be positioned near the couple.
2 on groom at different heights and one on bride.

I was going to go with a sennheiser g3 kit but then am contemplating getting something like the Tascam Dr07 or Olympus Ls-7 and then get OscarTech mics which would be far cheaper. If I did this though I wouldn't have the ability to use the wired lavs with my SD Mix Pre D (or 302 if I decide to keep it). Anyone have any suggestions on what seems to be the best feature set /tradeoff?

because they can be at different heights--its common courtesy to never mic the bride--and one is a back up.

Re-read your first post where you said you were using 3 mics, two on the groom and one on the bride! Actually it's not a "courtesy" to avoid micing the bride, it's paranoia on the part of wedding shooters who are embarrassed about discussing wardrobe issues and mic concealment under the wedding dress with her. It is occasionally done, especially where the bride is someone from the theatre, performing arts, or media worlds where wearing a wire concealed on the bodice is second nature. If you did mic her, you'd get better results than relying on a more distant mic on the groom - I'd offer it as an option during your discussions with the couple and let them decide the issue.

yeah your right---then the bride needs to be wireless?
One of my first weddings I did mic the bride and the audio was extremely clear, we just taped it under her dress in the back

Why is "different heights" signicant here? Is the bride much shorter (or taller?) than the groom? Without all the relevant details, what we see here seem like random, uncorrelated factoids.

See the general advantages/disadvantages summary I prepared...

I'll look at your posting.

the height difference is supposedly a suggestion made by Rob Adams to try and get the best position for the bride if there's a huge difference which in some cases there are.

umm, i was at least partially satirical in that post, but yea it could work, but i wouldn't bet on it being anything but hollow quality.

lol

for now i'm thinking i'll capture the bridge through my avantone or ntg3 positioned next to her on the vows---i'm just thinking about situations that could arise if i couldn't get to do that

actually, one thing i've done in the past which works a treat, is dangle a lav over between them. that is of course if there's something over them to dangle from.

There are a great many different ways of solving the problem depending on many factors including what equipment you have available, how much time you have to set-up, experiment, what the participants are wearing, what is around them, how cooperative the wedding coordinator and/or the bride are, etc. etc. etc.

There are two axioms to always remember in this (or any other) situation:
1) A wired microphone is always better (more reliable) than a wireless.
2) For most normal things, closer is almost always better than farther away.

In many real-world situations (like weddings) these factors sometimes work against each other (especially depending on what gear is available) so everything is a judgement call.

thanks!

for the upcoming one I am able to use my hyper and the wireless is backup
since i haven't spent money yet I'm just wondering what options I should lay down since one of the later weddings this year i know I can't use my mics the way I can---i'll try and weight sennheiser g3 vs pocket recorders
