wireless microphones

I'm presently trying to purchase a wireless microphone system, but I'm suck at the begining. I'm not sure if I need a UHF wireless system or a VHF wireless system.

I'll be using the system for various jobs that I get, but I'd also like to use it in my up coming short. ( if i need to for far shots)

Can anyone recomend a wireless microphone for me.

UHF. Maybe the Audio-Technica R100x, T101x which has the advantage of being True Dual Diversity - user selectable frequencies. The popular Sennheiser G2100 series might be a good choice (more frequency choices), but I think I'd be a bit concerned about it's lack of True Diversity. I think the Audio Technica also has balanced output in the receiver and the Sennheiser does not - at least that's what one person told me. I'm about to make a purchase myself and I'm leaning toward the AT but still haven't decided if I'd go with the supplied 830 lav mic or try to decipher specs to compare to some lav that might be better but not much more expensive.

Havent checked the AT, but Im gonna... otherwise its Sennheiser on the lower end, or Lectrosonics on a higher end.

I used to recommend the AT all the time. A friend of mine bought one and it's a decent system... but that was before the Sennheiser G2. When the G2 came out it basically made that AT obsolete. Recently I bought another wireless in that price range and I wouldn't, and didn't, consider anything else. I got the G2 set... and pretty soon I'll buy another one.

The diversity isn't as big of a deal as you think it would be. It doesn't matter WHAT wireless set you get in a sub-$1,500 price range... you WILL have occasional dropouts and other problems... but for the most part with either the AT or the G2 you will have pretty decent results and they'll be on the same level of performance. The conveniences of the G2 are what makes it the EASY class leader in that price-range right now. If you play with the G2 and then anything else in that price range you'll see that there is ZERO competition with the Sennheiser.

Here's what you get with the AT:

1) True diversity
2) XLR output
3) TA5F (industry standard) input on bodypack

Here's what sucks about the AT in comparison:

1) BIG and heavy receiver, transmitter not very ergonomic
2) Adjustments in both TX and RX are done with little screws INCLUDING frequencies!
3) During diversity switching there is a faint switching sound that is audible when monitoring but WILL NOT be noticeable on the soundtrack... still sucks hearing it.

Here's what you get with the G2:

1) Both TX and RX are TINY and very ergonomic (you can and will mount the RX on your hotshoe... it's not even an option with the AT)
2) Instant and EASY setup (RX scans for open frequencies and offers 4 channel choices... in most cases you won't even have to use this as you can just turn the RX on first and see if any RF is present... if the green light doesn't come on then you just turn on the TX and you're good to go... if RF IS present then you scan and it sets 4 channels FOR YOU... easy huh? No tiny dials)
3) Longer battery life then any other wireless I know of (with my Lectro it was scary doing anything long with the TX without using Lithium 9V)
4) G2 uses AA batteries (so rechargeables are an option and no more expensive 9V)

Here's what sucks about it:

1) Everything that the AT has in it's favor which the G2 lacks (which still isn't enough to outweigh the "pros" of going G2)

matt, what lectro system do/did you have?

do you reckon dropping lectro for G2 is actually a conceivable option?

im trying to figure out if its worth shelling out the LITERALLY thousands for 2 Lectro sets (100 series) with supplied Trams, or just to get G2s with, say, B6's on them?

With the lectro I sometimes think im paying for the name! Is it that much better (all things considered: quality, battery life, convenience etc)?

Did you read my other post yet? I don't want to get a double thread going... but I had a 100 and wasn't blown away by it.

Lectro 100 Good? Yes. Better then G2? Yes. WAY better then G2? No.
