I'm in need of a wireless setup for weddings. I'm new to the audio realm so was hoping you guys could throw me some recommendations on a good package. thanks!!!
I use Senhe. G2's for everything.. they are rock solid, UHF and pretty cheap, buy the kit and if you can handle a bit extra get the best LAV's you can afford, however the included mics are pretty decent, by far suitable for weddings.
If you can afford it, go for the Lectrosonic 200 series. But Sennheiser G2's do a darn good job for the price. I've got 3 ENG100 kits, and they work great. One of the best features of the G2 is that it can automatically scan for a clear frequency. The lav in the kit pick up a lot of ambient sounds, so you may want to consider a better lav like Tram TR50 or Senn MKE2. But again, the kits are a good value for the money.
If you want a handheld mic, almost any dynamic mic would do for a wedding. But the standard one used by new crews is the Electro Voice RE50.
I went for the Senn G2 and it works really well. Used it for a couple of doco's and a wedding. I did struggle with the wedding as it was all outdoors and I had no windshield on the mic so some of the sound has been trashed!
But saying that I wasn't planning on using too much sound in the final product anyway.
It's a great piece of kit and looks pretty cool mounted on the camera!
I use a Sony Wireless Lapel, man, it works awesome! (I actually use two in the sermon, one on the preacher, and one on the groom). And send it to different Channels on the DVX
That way you get enough of the Bride, Groom, Preacher.
For me works well, can upload a demo if you want ?
A whole lot of wedding videographers are scrapping wireless for the vows (and music!) and using iRiver voice recorders with lav mics. These things run around $150 each, depending on model chosen (I picked the 795 model, as have a great many others) and you can use one for the Officiant (preacher or whatevah), one for the groom (or whatevah!!!) and one for the speakers podium, or music. An excellent mic for $25 friggin dollars, and I mean trully excellent, can be had from Giant Squid Audio. Head over to DVinfo.net and check out my tests.
Also, do a search over there in the Wedding and Event section for iRiver, and do the same at Video University's forums, and you will see that TONS of wedding videographers are making this a new standard! And since it's not wireless, you dont have to deal with the risks of losing the signal or frequency interferance.
Now, if you feel like you've just GOT to go wireless, and you absolutely cannot afford the Seinhiesers, I have the Audio Technica Pro88W VHF wireless kit that ran about $169 each (bought two kits) which even Douglas Spotted Eagle says is the only VHF kit he would ever recommend (if you simply cannot afford a decent UHF system). One of the reasons it rocks is that the signal is not compressed between the transmitter and the reciever. This kit (not the mics that come with it) is known to transmit a very good, above average signal....BUT since it is VHF, it is more suseptable to frequency interferance. Now, caveat that with the fact that I have had ZERO interferance....but I live in a rural area. It is recommended that if you live within a dense population, DO NOT use VHF, as there will be a lot of competition in the air. If you do go for this ( and I would assume other kits as well, but I KNOW with this one) you will need to replace the mics, as they are pretty crappy. Get yourself a few Giant Squid non battery powered omni-directional (so it will pick up a wider pattern so you can hear the bride on the groom mic....you cant mic the bride for several obvious reasons) lav, for $25....well, at midnight tonight the sale ended, so they are $30. Well worth far more than that.....the Giant Squids are some of the finest products of any sort I have ever bought!
I just picked up a Audio Technica U100 Series. True diversity UHF, multi-channel system. All metal chassis. $500.00 at B$H. Sounds awesome and built like a tank. I'm not a fan of plastic chassis. Maybe a little pricey but like I said, it's built like a tank.
