wireless mic help

Hello out there,
I'm looking to buy a fairly decent uhf wireless lav sytem, and really have my eye on the sennheiser 100 evolution series(round $500), this will be used in weddings, and hopefully much more, however I'm unsure of the A,B,C frequency they offer, and which will work best if one is working in an urban area. This is my first post on dvxuser, but have been scouring this site night and day reading all the cool stuff eveyone is sharing. Thanks for any imput. :D

Re: wireless mic help

If you do some searches, you'll find lots of info on wireless sets. Briefly, I'd recommend you wait a month or so (if you can) for the new Sennheiser G2 system that will be replacing the Evo100. It will be the same price (~$460) and will offer superior features. If you're unsure about frequencies, you can check what's (relatively) free in your area at Sennheiser's or Lectrosonic's web sites.

Re: wireless mic help

I just purchased the Sony UWP-C1 system for $499 US through B&H. They are offering a $100 gift card with the system changing the actual cost to $399. I can't comment too much on the Sony other than I tested it's long range capabilities by setting up my camera and receiver in my house then walking outside behind my garage, 125 ft or so, then spinning around a few times as I was walking. There was absolutely no drop out. It is a diversity system. I played back and found the sound quality excellent!

Re: wireless mic help

Barry s, I will definitely check those sites out. Thanks.

GuyS, I also saw that Sony system on B&H's site, but was turned off that they didn't have specs on the range of the system. Oh, but that 100bone gift card is tempting. thanks

Re: wireless mic help

B&H's specs are not always accurate. They try, but with a catalog of hundreds of thousands of products, errors creep in. Always go to the manufacturer's site to get the REAL specs.

Re: wireless mic help

This is a simple demonstration that I do for customers to demonstrate the power of the Sennheiser Evolution 500 kit:  I have them sit in the lobby with the receiver and the headphones, then I walk down the hall, go downstairs into the warehouse, transmitting my voice the whole time, walk to the back of the warehouse and out the back door.  The customer can hear the changing room dynamics as I walk through the different areas. Then I walk back the same way.  I have never had a customer hear a single dropout, even through a 3-foot concrete floor and about 6 concrete walls, with powerlines right outside our building.  It is so much fun, and the customer is always amazed.  ;D  After selling over 250 evolution kits, I have never had a single return or complaint.  That is a lot to say for that product.

Re: wireless mic help

Hi Rush,

Have you tried a similar test with the Evolution 100? Not that I want to put you through any extra work, but it'd be nice to know how well it holds up under those same circumstances...

Re: wireless mic help

yeah, i'd like to know that too. I think I will be purchasing the 112's from you before june...

Re: wireless mic help

Absolutely.  I do sell the 500 more than the 100, but mainly due to functionality rather than effectiveness.  100 doesn't have the Phantom Power that is so critical for hand-held mics or the balanced audio output (Creating low noise).  But it has the same power and range.  It is a great kit.

Re: wireless mic help

We just sent back a Sennheiser 100 unit. Too hissy (noise floor) for our taste. Nice set of features for the price though, other than not being true diversity...

Re: wireless mic help

Not having phantom power is indeed annoying. But seeing as it uses its own mic connector, I don't really find that very limiting, because the only mic I have that fits it is Sennheiser's own.

That's one thing I like better about the Audio Technica U101 -- it has a more standard TA5F connector, same as on Lectrosonics units. I don't think it supplies phantom power either though... but at least you can get TA5F->XLR connectors and use it to convert a handheld dynamic or electret condensor mic to being wireless.

Hey Rush. Thanks for the call today. I just sent you an email with samples from both units (Sennheiser and AT). Both were recorded on 2 separate Panny DVC200 1/2" pro cams at the same event.

BTW: It was a fellow videographer that was helping me on the shoot that own it. He purchased the unit from B&H about 2 1/2 weeks ago. He has already returned it and (I believe) ordered two Sony units (new model I believe) from a local vendor.
