Wireless LAV and Shotgun Mics

I just recently purchased my DVX100. I now need audio equipment. I need the cheapest I can possibly get also. I've been checking out ebay and seen some wireless LAV for $50 by some brand Nady. Never heard of them, so I thought I'd ask everybody here.

What is the best and cheapest wireless LAV mic system I can get
and
Same for Shotgun mic. Best and cheapest.

Thanks a lot

Wireless...I wouldn't go any lower than a Sennheiser G2 system ($700). You spend all that money getting a nice camera, try to use at least decent audio and grip gear.

everything... drama shorts, documentaries, commercials for local businesses... my mood changes a lot, so its hard to just pin point one genre or field.

cannon,

I spent a number of years in the sound business, retails sales, live sound, studio, rentals, etc. I'm intimately familiar with and was an authoized dealer for Nady and 6 or 7 other brands, including Senny, Azden, Shure, etc . They all have their pros and cons.

Here's the thing, what ever brand you settle on make sure you get UHF & NOT VHF!!!!!!! It has to to be true diversity - not suedo diversity ( 2 antennas does diversity make!). It should also be multi channel - not a single channel.

Why? I can't tell you how many gigs I rented gear to churches, clubs, schools, stadioums, concerts, etc with VHF single channel only to have them tell me the police or fire dept, or local radio station was coming over their channel AND they couldn't change channels to block it. When I would go out to do live sound, TV production, live recording, etc, with my crew, we always brought the best quality UHF, multi channel channel wireless AND wired backup mics too!

In addition to the above, if no one has told you yet that the sound quality is half the impact of the production, then let that be my gift to you.

Using $50 mics with a DVX is like asking: Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Sarah Evans, Alan Jackson, Bono, Madona, and any other celebrity you care to name (outside of rap), to sing a natinal concert with a $12 Radio Shack mic.

You don't need the best, but you sure don't want to get junk becuse you'll be buying another one after you figure that out.

Also remember that even UHF True diversity can have static from atmospheric bursts & changes and diesel engines, large electric motors or generators, etc, etc, etc.

If you really want to capture live sound in sync with the footage, wired mics are ALWAYS going to give you better performance and cleaner sound.

As they say, it's your money! ALL mics are NOT the same.

Ken

Thats great advice, and I would love to see the above.

LOL ncje.

Yeah, please don't use a $50 mic. You might as well use the onboard mic! Audio is just as important as video, get a Sennheiser or Lectrosonics- invest some money.

As for the shotgun mic, I sugges you invest a small amount of time reading the audio section of this forum. Read the stickies at the top and use the search and you'll quickly find your question has been asked many many times before and there are some very informative answers out there.
The level of knowledge and expertise of the regular posters is fantastic.

Unfortunately you'll quickly find that "best" and "cheap" don't really go together, however in my opinion, the cheapest entry level mic with anything like decent sound would be the Rode NG1 or 2. Howeverr if you want to do all the things you are talking about, and you have paying clients expecting great results for their money, I'd sugges tyou really need to up the ante, spend more and get one of the mics that keeps coming up as favourites, such as the AT4073, the Sennheiser 416, or the Sanken Cs-1 [which I recently purchased].

The best advice you have been given here is by kenackr when he said sound is half the impact of production. You really need to allow yourself a good budget for your wireless and shotty, as well as for shockmounts and wind protection. Skimp on it and you will definitely be dissapointed.

Cheers and good luck.

yes it seems the DVX guys are fully behind the sennhieser G2 wireless lav system. But not the ME66 shotgun - they confidently recommend the Audio Technica 508?? sorry i forgot the exact number. and they're right, the ME66 with the DVX is hot as they say. Wish I read and bought the AT. The remaining question... what is the best wired Lav for the money?
