Wireless headphone feeds

Anyone know about, how to.... find, or make, a wirelelss headphone distribution system. I want to deliver up to 6-8 phones for on set monitoring each with independent volume control.

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

I'm after stereo headphones with mono switch & I want to own rather than rent. When I own something I can usually count on it being there in working order and use it on others projects as well as my own!

I already have a nice little 4 channel amp by Rolls that really boosts the signal. I'm using Yamaha Rh-5M headphones that sound nearly as good as my Grado reference cans.

Buying a distribution system is OK, but if it's not too tough I could build my own, I've built all sorts of stuff over the past 30 years, etc...if anyone knows where i can find schematics and an overview of these systems.

I want a feed for Director, Script sup, mixer, boomer, & 2 - 4 for the curious. Anything else I'm missing....beside common sense? ;)

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

Comteks are definitely the way to go. You'll need at least one transmitter, and however many recievers you'll need. You can get the used 72 series stuff for pretty reasonable. If you want the new 216's, it's gonna cost you. I recommend you rent them. They rent for really cheap, and..at least from here when they go out, they always work. Comteks are made to take a beating, so they hold up pretty well in the field.

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

if you wont to feed stereo the seenheise 300 lissening wierless system is very nice , for symple solution there is a bunch of radio fm kits that you can build , ( i sow one 1 wat to feed over the hall town)
or something like that with radio walkmans for 30 feet range
http://www.ccrane.com/fm-transmitter.aspx
of corse you have to find a clean channel on your radio
for mono - comtec or lectrosonics ifb are the industry standart , i use the lectros - about 200 feet range with out any problem

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

why the f,,, you need to feed the sound mixer - what did he wrong to you?;-)
what about the catring guy - he have to know why the people curs him

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

Oleg, besides being one of the most knowledgeable persons *ever* on audio recording, you are one of the funniest! ;D

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

Oleg, my thought on the sound mixerwireless set is it allows extra mobility to walk around and test with a boom op the sound location...I know it's pushing it, but I sometimes have to work with people who's skills are not top, middle, even low level, so it can take some time to place the mike. I figure since I'm planning right now i might as well add a cordless in too, as well as the std from the mix,..I know , why would you have a bad boom op,....because sometimes there's no money, no operator available or I'm too cheap & I need someone to folow the action, otherwise....boom stand.

the catering guy....yeah! if they're cheap..... ;) but he better have really good food.
I say 6 feeds are needed ......any more ideas?... :)

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

10s,
I don't know what budget you are looking at but here on some comteks at ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3319&item=3865911394&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Comteks are very hardy and picking up used is a pretty safe bet.

Oleg's idea with the FM transmitters is something I have been wanting to test but haven't gotten around to it yet. Here is another FM transmitter.

$30 bucks might be worth the test. Let us know if you give it a try and how it works. I read reviews of these FM transmitters that say you are lucky if you get a good signal at 1 foot. I think it depends on the area you are using it in.

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

Excellent, thanks...i look into it! i don't expect my system to be anything super great... just good enough.

thanks :)

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

you can alwais add aditional recievers ( comtek() even the tuned to diff fq buy changing the internal kristal - few $

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

If it is just for monitoring sound the FM transmitter thing works just fine. I was working on a doc and did this with my ipod transmitter so the director could monitor the sound comming from that camera. Worked great, and when the director got bored with the content there was always vast amounts of oldies to choose from.

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

Take a look at www.decade.ca

Professionals FM transmitter... unlimited receivers ( everybody can use their walkmans) ... I used them before .. very high quality

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

Pierre, the transmitters look pretty interesting. I like the idea of the Walkmans...bring your own if you want to hear.

thanks!

Re: Wireless headphone feeds

I'm in the same boat here, looking for a way for the director, script supervisor and boom op to monitor, and found a fairly reasonably priced system from Nady.  They make two different versions, the EO3 (that's oh, not zero) and the ALD-800.  They are both the same units, with the ALD being bundled.  These are designed for in ear monitoring for bands, but can serve the same purpose here.  I just ordered it today, and paid $149 for the transmitter and one receiver and $33 each for the other two receivers.  You can add an unlimited number of receivers all on the same frequency. They are a VHF system, but I'm not so much worried about pure quality for those monitoring, more that they can hear what's being said. You can also connect a mic to the transmitter, so I can adjust the boom op in situations where I'm far away. I'm going to be using them on a shoot that starts in about two weeks, so I'll let everyone know how they work out.  If anyone has any experience with them please pass it along.  (I can still cancel my order for a day or so... ;-)
