Wire harness for crane

Hello Listers,

I am going to loom up a wire harness for my crane. This will speed setup and protect what is a surprisingly expensive wire bundle. I'm including what I can think of for typical use, and as of now, here is my list. Can you think of anything else?

Focus and Zoom ala Panasonic
Component x3
XLR4 power for lights or other accessories
XLR3 audio for remote mic
HDMI

No SDI for now

TIA

You say "no SDI for now," but surely it couldn't hurt to include a length of coax with a BNC at each end. Wouldn't add much of either bulk or cost to what you've already got planned. If you do BNC connectors on the component video cables, you could make them do double duty.

The double duty is a thought, but there would have to be 6 adapters to convert, 3 on each end for my existing component scheme. I can re-loom the bundle later if need be. Or, if I go SDI in the future, I can cut the rca plugs off and crimp coax on to the damned expensive Mogami cables.

Ggrantly, I would also double the audio feeds. Not just for redundancy, but in case you fly a stereo mic or you rent it out to someone that does. Yeah, Mogami is pricey, but it is good cable.

I built a wire harness for a crane a few years back. Since that time I have purchased 4 new cameras. Do yourself a favor and plan ahead as others have mentioned.

I used 12 pair Mogami for my jib.

2 - XLR
1 - camera power. I've not used this one. I've been using the battery on-board
4 - pan and tilt motors (2 pair per motor)
1 - focus
1 - iris
2 - start/stop
1 - index
1 - zoom

separate cable for HDMI

If you're coming SDI from camera, just let two of the [component] BNCs dangle. You can also run TC up to the camera to jam from the operator position.

    BNC Component / HDSDI
    LANC
Power (Various Adapters @ Camera End)

Uh, that adds up to 13. Maybe only one pair for start/stop?

I wasn't thinking since sdi is a single cable not 3 like component, so only 2 adapters not 6. FWIW, I have a HPX170 and a HMC40 run to a DP6 without sdi. The DP6 can be upgraded to sdi at a future date. Component is the common connection between the two cams. Though I think I'll include a HDMI just in case. The spiral loom I use can be undone and re-wound, though it take about an hour, so I can modify it later. Audio is a good idea also.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
