Windscreen for Lavalier Mics.

Hi,

Great forums. I am new here so if this has been asked I apologize. A search didn't find anything.

I have an outdoor wedding in a few weeks so I plan to purchase some winscreens for my 2 lavalier mics. One is the factory mic with the Sony UWP-C2 and the other is the factory mic with the Sennheiser EW 100 G2.

The Sony has a foam windscreen but the Senn does not.

Because the wedding is outdoors I am very concerned about wind. Is the foam winscreen adequate for the Sony or is there something else I should buy while I am already buying one for the Senn.

Next question, what do I buy for the Senn? Are all windscreens the same? Fur winscreens seem to be a bit harder to find, are they much better? Keep in mind it must be concealed for the wedding so it can't be too bulky (not that the Sony is that small to begin with).

Thanks,

Both Rycote and Reinhardt make furries for lavalier mics.
At about 30 bucks they aren't cheap; and they aren't very nice to look at, but they work very well (together with a foam screen). I had a many shot where the mic is CLEARLY visible with this furry ball hanging onto the talent/subject's clothing, and I couldn't care less, as audio was great, even under horrible conditions. These were situations were the visibility of a mic mattered not (e.g. documetary, etc.)

It'll depend largly on how windy the day turns out to be.

Alternatively you might want to try placing the mics under clothing though. There's some sticky pads just for that by Rycote.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am not too familiar with sound so I may sound ignorant but what would be the best place to attach under clothing? Under the tux coat or tie? My concern would be that there would be a lot of clothing scratching and also muffled sound.

Since the tuxes are almost always black it may not be a problem to have a windscreen that isn't hidden...

At $30 they aren't cheap but I expect to do more outdoor shoots so it may be very well worth buying. I have bought from B and H before. Are there other sites with these gear you would recomend?

You can get the Rycote furry in black, grey or white. Look for the Rycote UNDERCOVERs as one option for attachment under clothing:

Check Reinhardt http://www.reinhardt-film.com/products.php for an alternative source to Rycote. They often have eBay auctions, and do sell to the USA I believe. We have bought from them in the past.

Just be sure you get the right size. I have several EW 100 G2's - some come with the bigger ME2 and include foam while one's with the smaller ME4 didn't have the foam. I've converted to Countryman's (over the ear mic) which usually don't need foam but aren't appropriate for weddings (even though our Pastor always wears his on the altar).

Regards, Michael
