Windows XP Or Vista For CS4

Hi;

I'm making a move from a rock solid older Adobe Production Studio to CS4 and unchartered waters and need advice and input from CS4 users as to which OS is better for CS4. XP or Vista.? Thanks in advance.

I've got CS4 running on Vista 64 and Vista 32, and it's running great on both. If you've got a 64 bit system, I would encourage you to think about Vista 64...everything runs so much faster and smoother on it.

64 bit platforms are better than 32 bit platforms in the long run.
I have both and the only problem with my 64 bit setup is that there are some programs that I cannot install because Vista Ultimate won't allow unsigned drivers.
64 bit will become the standard at some point in the near future but just keep in mind that you may need two workstations for a while or you may need to do without some of your programs. CS3 and CS4 will run on 64 bit systems....

Speed-wise 64 bit all the way!!!
Plus you can really use more ram and more cores.

In terms of OS needs XP does have a lower overhead than Vista but if you are going to work with native AVCHD in real time you will need more RAM than what you can get from any 32 bit system which maxes out at 3 gigs [you can install up to 4 gigs but your usable addresses will be more like 3 gigs].
I any 64 bit system be it XP 64 or Vista 64, your address assignments are/can be much higher allowing you to actually use more RAM.

Can you work with AVCHD on a 32 bit system? Yes.
Will it be painful on a 32 bit system without transcoding? 9 times out of 10, yes.
However if you have an option go with a 64 bit system because it is just faster and you will have more usable RAM which is a benefit when working with video and graphics.

Also keep in mind that XP won't be supported much longer so Vista would be a better move in my view.

Thanks for all the great responses. Much appreciated. I just ordered CS4. I am thinking about going with a HP workstation w/ quad proc, 4MB ram, and Vista 64 bit OS. I will be working only with HDV and DV. The programs I will be using mostly will be PP, AE, IL, PS and FL. Please let me know if these programs will work out of the box or will I have issues and wait for updates. Thanks.

Good choice on the computer. I've got an HP workstation, and it's the best computer I've ever owned. CS4 should work fine for you right out of the box. Others may disagree with that, but I've been using it for just over a month now and I've had no problems...and I have a feeling an update is coming very, very soon.

You should have no problems with CS4 working out of the box outside of the "normal" buggy issues that have been reported here and elsewhere - Adobe is working on that.

Hi,

I have XP, SP3, 4Gb ram and it's okay.

MS and Adobe are always 'fixin' things and sometimes they get things right, sometimes they don't.

AVCHD is a very nice add on to PP, and there's a lot of really shinny add ons to all the features in each of the applications and some new ones to boot, but there is hardly anything in the whole picture to warrant a wholesale upgrade.

I'll upgrade to made the pain easier for CS5 or whatever, but I don't know that I could sell this to anyone.

Thats interesting to know Vista 64 works with CS3 & CS4.

I bought an M90 Dell laptop with 4gig Ram and was disapointed to read the limitations of Ram regarding Adobe.
Seems it is a RAM hog.
Thinking of getting a Workstation Desktop next year.
What is better....Dell or HP?
I want to put something like the Matrox RT in it.

What are peoples experience using Vista 64 with Adobe PRemiere & AE for that matter.

I would have upgraded to CS4 had the Encore BluRay menus been as I had hoped but alas no.
Was really disapointed about that.

Dell or HP is kinda like 6 in one hand and half a dozen in the other.
I've used 1 Dell and 3 HP's before I jumped over to Vaio's and I personally like the HP's better.
I got a little more for my money with the HP's over the Dell too if that helps.

Yep CS3 can run on 64 bit but it runs as a 32 bit program so it won't/can't take advantage of the extra resources but it seems faster to me.

Well I just may try HPs next time after owning A Dell Desktop & Dell M90 Laptop.

Have you tried CS4 with 64bit?
Can you say % wise how much faster it is at rendering which, lets face it we all want to cut down on as a most of all feature.

After building my own workstations for years I made the switch to HP workstations about five years ago and never looked back. They are rock solid and cheaper than building your own IMO. I just ordered my 5th HP in as many years, an XW4600 w/Intel quad proc, 4g ram, 250g HD etc for under $1900. I decided to go with XP Pro because of it's reputation as a rock solid OS and my own level of expertise and familiarity using it, and HP offers XP pre installed and Vista 64 on a disk for free should I decide to upgrade in the future.

I'm planning on the RT X2 as well, and the XW 4600 is approved by Matrox. I love their products. I have their Digisuite and RTX 100 systems. They still work but are obsolete and therefore Mothballed. I have a fit each time I think of how much the Digisuite system cost in '97. To put it in perspective , I just bought Adobe CS4 bundle, An HP workstation and 2T storage and even with an RT X2 Le thrown in, it will still be less than what I paid for the 50gig raid array alone, for the Digisuite.

I'm still with CS3 so I can't say. Sorry.

CS3 on 64 bit seems faster to me.

I don't have the full specs but my 32 bit laptop is:
Vista Ultimate
Intel T9400 2.53GHz
4 gigs of RAM [3 used]
ATI HD 3400
320 hard drive spinning at 5400rpm.

My 64 bit laptop is:
Vista Ultimate
Intel T9400 2.53GHz
4 gigs of RAM all used
NVIDIA 9600M GT
Dual 320 hard drives spinning at 7200 rpm.

Really? About 11 months ago I put together a system for under $1200 with a 2.66 Ghz Core Duo, 4 GB RAM, 750 GB HD (7200 rpm) for data and a 150 GB HD (10000 rpm) for the OS. Granted we probably are using different graphics cards (mine is a 512 MB nVidia 8800 GT, I'm guessing you're using a Quattro solution?). I also already had a monitor and an OS, so maybe that's why the price is so different.

I just bought 4 more GB of RAM today in anticipation of getting a 64 edition of Vista to run the new Photoshop. Is it really that big of a difference jumping from 32-bit?

Chris

Runn/Hide....have you any stats on a 5 minute Ex1/3 mxf file exported to a few formats as an example of speed based on your system to give an idea?

Know it is a generalistic question as there is so many different variations but I bet you test certain parameters like all of us to get an idea.

It will be interesting to see how your system runs when you get the extra 4gig of ram Chris.

Chris;

That' a great price. I priced the parts at Tiger Direct and came up with a figure of $ 1400 for just the MB @ $350, Quad proc @ $200, Graphics $350, OS $200, HD $100, 4g Ram $200. Add all the other extras and I was looking at well over $2000 and no real warranty. The Hp comes with a 3 year warranty. I have never had any problems with my previous HP purchases and never had to contact HP, and all of them work perfectly to this day. Thats peace of mind. Although I do miss the excitement ( but not the frustrations ) of building my own and the adrenaline rush when it powers up for the first time. Oh well...
