I want to be able to output videos in h.264 cause' I want to put them on the internet. I'd like to get the best quality possible, and WMV doesn't stream downloads very well. :/

How good is quicktime 7 pro for Win at this point? Are all the bugs worked out? I heard there was a gamma issue. has that been corrected?
I want to know before I make a purchase.

thanks.

I have used it a bit, but as you said, I had gamma issues with h.264 and have not had time to research it very much. The encode definitely looked washed out... all my blacks went to gray and the contrast was lost.

yeah, that's what I was referring to. Has this been corrected for the PC version?

My testing was done in 7.0.4, but it was a quick and dirty trial run so there could be a fix or setting I overlooked to make things pretty again.

I have been using it for my iPod and also uploading the same versions for the web and it looks good. The only issue I see at this point is that most people (PC users) are not going to have QT7 installed and WILL they want to install it to view your video? That is the main reason I am still offering QT and WMP files on my site.

As far as looks...IMO, they both look about the same. .m4v looks better until you evaluate the file size. Most of the time you will see that it is a bigger file than .wmv, so if you up the Kbps in WME you will find similar quality.

I do agree that QT7 does stream quicker than wmv. As far as the purchase goes, $29.00 for an incredible tool is cheeeep!

Good luck,
Curtis

I've been using Xvid to encode my mpeg4 files into an mp4 container. Divx, and X264 are all open source encoders that work well too. They are unversal, because the mp4 container is open source, so any mpeg4 enabled decoder can read the files. Quicktime 7 has support for mp4 containers, however you need to be careful while encoding h.264 files to be compatible for quicktime.

They need to have : AAC audio only
Baseline profile with most of the quantisizing options diabled (I can't remember which ones off the top of my head)
And a lot of processor power to decode them.

Heres an example of an Xvid Mpeg-4 file that is quicktime compatible
