Got some, freaking, ".avi" file issues.

I think i may have downloaded a codec, or some random crap. But now when i go to edit .avi files, the video doesnt show up. Yet the audio plays. However when I try to play the .avi files in windows movie player. 70% of the time there okay. It's the same with all editing software.

I tried updating to the latest WMP, but i had this message about a fake windows, validation. Going to speak to my mate about that, he's a pc geek, set my pc up for me. But I won't be able to do that for about a week or so. I finally found a work around.

Now i have WMP 11, but it hasnt solved the issue. Nice interface though..

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Google's my friend, but he's not being helpfull at the moment.

Thanks for any help, I'm off to bed. Been a long day.

Get VLC and it will make you more attractive...

OK, so it may not make you more attractive but you should be able to play just about any format under the sun. Plus has tons of features/and is free.

D'oh! I thought MPlayer and Media Player Classic were the same thing. My mistake.

Even still, check out Media Player Classic as an option. The interface isn't much to look at but it will play A LOT of files (even stupid rm/ram/rvm files if you install Real Alternative).

Thank's for the advice and feedback, didn't know there were 5 more replies.

I've tried both, and there both extremely grand in there own ways. Though when I go to edit, the problems not resolved. I can watch clips find in those programs i downloaded and tried on seperate occasions, but when it comes to editing, i still just here audio and see no footage.

Same goes for Vegas, MAGIX, even good old basic WMM.

I see, sounds like some ones broken their Codecs, you may be able to rebuilt it using GraphEdit, or try out CodecSniper to kill off damaged codecs and then reinstall fresh copies.

Try checking your Windows File Protection, by doing the following:

Click Windows Start >> then Run

at the command line type:

sfc /scannow

make sure you have a space between the sfc and slash

//EDIT:

Be very carefull with Codec Sniper you can really do some damage if you kill of the wrong codecs.
