What is the best windows program or way to convert my avchd files into a file type supported by after effects and without to much compression?
cheers

The most compatible method would likely be Avid DNxHD, which is a freely available editing codec, that you can convert with right *in* After Effects (or better yet, from Adobe Media Encoder).
