windows 7, CS4, 4GB ram...same old problems

I just recently upgraded to Windows 7

Anyway, my issue is slow/choppy playback and rendering problems.

I do something as simple as change the speed to 33% and it won't render a clip, there is no rhyme or reason to it, it just happens whenever is convient for adobe to drive me insane. Sometimes i'll have a clip with a mild effect like a sapphire plug in added to a clip and it just f*cks up the clip and will freeze for part of it.

I don't know what is wrong, but I thought actually having 4gb of ram and windows 7 combined with cs4 would make a difference but it's bringing back bad memories from version 6.5

I'm need to move forward with my editing career and need good solid working and FAST programs and hardware to do it.

My comp is a xeon dual core 3ghz processor, 4gb ram ,raid-0 just for a basic idea of what i'm working with. I did do a full install of windows 7, maybe i screwed up the Raid-0 setup....

any ideas?

What type of footage are you editing? By 'and it won't render a clip' do you mean it doesn't play back properly, or literally it doesn't render when you hit 'enter'?

xd ex setting. 1080 sp

parts of the footage won't render sometimes, no matter what. playback is pretty weak for dissolves and dips to black etc.

Using 64bit Windows? If not, go there and get at least 4 more gigs of RAM. What you have now is bare minimum for cs4 and HD footage.

Got a good graphics card?

64 bit.

i could add another 3ghz dual-core processor...but that is $1000 investment, is there a better way to spend my money.

Basically I want a system that can handle effects heavy HD editing. I'm looking for something fast Ben Johnson (before he quit steroids) and real-time rendering.

How much of an investment do I need to make to have a system like this? Money is not an issue.

you'll have to wait to maybe the next version in cs5 until you see render free workflows in premiere that involve any effects. This is when it will be fully built for gpu and 64 bit computing. Until then, you should upgrade to at least a quad core, even an i7 is adequate and at least 8gigs of ram. And get at least a nvidia gtx 285 card. Read this article for more info.

by the way im using an old q6600 cpu with 8 gigs of ram on win 7 and this system runs just fine for my needs.

yeah a quad core mobo jammed full of ram would be sweet, i hear two Raid 0 setups (using 4 hard drives - 1 raid for scratch, 1 for OS) really helps boost it too.

I'm taking my computer in this week so i'll see what mods i can make for the time being, and if it' is worth dumping money into the current system or starting from scratch and build a monster system that will haul ass.

2 things that come to mind. Graphics card and memory.

I have a raid 0 configuration as well as 2 SATA drives. These are both very close
to being equal with the new SATA drives. They move very fast. I've had no
problems with them.

When was the last time you've done a fresh install?

It doesn't hurt to keep your computer clean or even have to copies of windows installed, one for editing, one for general browsing. but it DOES hurt for it to be cluttered.

Try doing a fresh install of windows as a last resort and use the latest drivers for your mother board, graohics card etc...
