Wind noise on AT875R

I have an Audio Technica AT875R and I was filming an outdoor scene last Monday. Despite using the windscreen as well as a deadcat, I was still picking up a lot of wind noise. It was actually quite a mild day as living in Ireland, it can be quite windy sometimes. Is there anyway that I could improvise the mic to help keep out wind noise (eg. an additional deadcat or cover) without having to fork out on something more expensive like the Rode Blimp??

if you're hearing wind through those items then yeah, you're going to have to step it up to a blimp. but it can get to a point where really no mic windjammer is going to block wind when it gets to a certain speed...

The whole purpose of a blimp w/dead cat is to handle the exact situation you experienced. There comes a point and time where you have to bite the bullet and buy the equipment required to do the job.

Instead of having to fork out on the blimp, I was wondering if there are any DIY suggestions?? (I have a zero budget)

A while ago I built some zeppelins. They actually worked pretty well, just don't show up on a paying shoot with them. I was doing FX work and those rigs tend to be eclectic so I could get away with it for awhile.

I wanted to use plastic mesh that looks like what you normally see. It's available but you need to be able to heat form it and I couldn't at the time. So I used expanded aluminum. It's light fairly strong and shapes pretty easily. I covered it with a double knit polypropylene fabric like is used in thermal underwear.

It worked well and looked pretty respectable. Putting the cloth outside the mesh worked better than the traditional inside covering but it wears fast. It was also a lot of work. The first one I ever made used open cel foam doughnuts as a suspension, the one with the expanded aluminum used a shock mount by AT that was meant for a stand.

If your good with building things it's not brain surgery, but it is a lot of work. At the price of the Rode zep I would have just bought it but when I made these I was looking at $1,200+ for the Rycote which changed the balance in favor of building.
