Wind noise and lavaliers

I've been looking at the Countryman EMW and the B3. Think I'm going with the B3.

Anyway, I was a bit concerned as to how lavaliers in general handle wind noise when outdoors. These will probably be mostly used under clothing. A search didn't reveal much.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I use the EMW and if placed under clothing wind noise is not really much of an issue. Obviously if it's out in the open that's another issue, not to mention the EQ.

Thanks for the info guys. I won't be doing a whole lot with them above the clothes, but a couple of Micro-Cats does sound like a sound investment to go with the two lavs I'll be buying - think it'll work well for one character in the narrative I'm working on who is mostly wearing a dark suit.

Micro-Cats are intended to go outside the clothing. According the the manufacturer there's a higher possibility of fabric noise if it's buried under a shirt.

I have Micro-Cats but instead use small sleeves made of fleece material purchased from a fabric store. My wife was making stuffed toys for our grandson's first birthday party, and has a bunch of this stuff leftover. It happened to work out well for my particular application. And in assorted colors, too.

These are clipped under the collar of T-shirts or other clothing and work very well. If the wind is blasting (more than 25 kts) there's not a whole lot you can do about it, and the Micro-Cat, placed outside the shirt, is sometimes the only option.

The fleece sleeves are cheap. Make extras. They're easily lost if not secured with some sort of tie. And so are the Micro-Cats -- except that a lost Micro-Cat is $25, and a lost fleece sleeve is $0.25.

Ugh I better stop using them under clothing then since they say they werent intended for that :\

I think it can go unsaid that a lav with or without a microcat has a "higher possibility of fabric noise" when its under clothing. Would I put it under a tight t-shirt? no. Would I put it in cleavage? sure.

Every single situation is different as is the solution.
Just another tool in the kit.

Rycote do varios wind protectors for lavs.

The "Furry" is a mini hairy windjammer.

"Overcovers" are smaller and are intended to be used on clothing or skin.

"Undercovers" are similar but are designed to be worn under clothing.

I hope this helps.

Someone is asking for suggestions. I'm giving him what the manufacturer recommends and also providing a cost effective solution that works for me in the real world. At least he gets a good start and not sent off in the wrong direction from day one.
