Wind chill factor--what an experience

Just thought I'd share a term with those of you in more temperate climates. The wind chill factor is what makes it feel colder than it is outside.

For example, tonight it's supposed to get down to -20 but with a 10 mph wind, it will feel like -40! You can get frostbite to exposed skin within 15 minutes. The area schools have all cancelled classes for today, as we're expecting -30 to -40 wind chills all day.

After all this cold, there will probably be 2+ feet of ice on the lakes. Which means you could hypothetically drive a locomotive on a lake. i know none of this is news to a lot of you, but those down south might get a kick out of it. :D

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

i don't know where you come from, but here it's suppose to be in the minus 15/20 ° celsius average for this time of the year and yesterday was +10° c. It's the third time since Chrismast that we've got warmer temperature, a very unusual weather this winter, but next week is suppose to be in the minus 20/25° c. :-/

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

Shadow, now that's cold. My truck would never start all winter.

I'm a couple hours south of Lake Superior. So I've got another one for ya: Lake effect snow. That's when cold air from Canada swoops across Lake Superior, causing the water to evaporate and turn to snow. The air current carries the snow south, and just dumps it all along the way. Not uncommon to get 12 inches in a few hours, especially north of here. Those living in Great Lakes states are familiar with this.

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

It was -40 without wind chill in Alaska just a day or two ago :o

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

I heard about that town in northern Alaska that had hurricane-force winds. Talk about wind chill! i think it was -70 w/wind chill. The whole town lost power, and all their water mains burst. What a mess. Nasty. :(

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

Where I live it was -30 C last night and is presently hovering around -24C, this is without the windchill...no snowboarding today...damn.

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

frizzle,

theres a little game that gets played in a small town area apx 45 imn from me where every year they drive a car out on the ice, and then place bets on when the car will fall through.. down to the hour. can win some big money i guess.

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

They have similar contests around here, except they sink a fish crib (basically a bunch of intertwined logs, makes good cover for fish). Sinking a car sounds like more fun, though.

Did you know that in Wisconsin if you drive out onto the ice and your car breaks through, you have to pay for it to be recovered? No, I didn't find out the hard way. :P

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

lol.. yeah i knew that.. same for snowmobiles and motorcylces. ive dropped a motorcross bike through once. :P

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

I was in Agusta, GA during the Storm of the Century aka 'Blizzard of 93'. Now, me being from Sunny San Diego? I was in freakin shock. I can't even imagine those poor souls on the seaboard.

Wind Chill was - 21 if I remember. Like I had any Winter Clothes :P

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

Frizzle Fry, at least you've got some snow to play around or to do nice images, here ski conditions are not at best after all this rain.

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

A buddy of mine went in the drink with his brother while they were icefishing in Wyoming. THey lost there ATV's and his beard (Long, biker-dude beard), but otherwise they survived...barely.

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

John, that's funny! The fact you have such a vivid memory (and graphics) to help you relive a cold day from 12 years ago shows how spoiled you are living in SD. ;) :D

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

I missed that winter, one of the coldest one of the century here, I was living in Paris, not Texas, France. ;D

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

Well you can all thank your lucky stars. Yesterday I went to go to start my car it was -45 with the windchill. That is just plain wrong. :'(

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

I was driving through florida ten years ago and somebody actually asked me that at a gas station. It took awhile until me figured out he saw the plug in the front.

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

Prairie - So, you have some kind of electrical 'warmer' for your engine? Does it go around the whole engine block or the radiator, or what?

Re: Wind chill factor--what an experience

Every car sold up here comes with a block heater.  I am not he most mechanically inclinded but it is like a heating rod that is in the engine core to keep the oil from freezing solid.  I guess pistons are not too happy moving in sludge.  You can get little battery covers as well.  And lets just say those remote car starters are really big up here. ;D
