Wimbledon

Any other HUUUUUUGE tennis fans out there?

Just caught wind of this one, and the brilliance of the idea made me wonder why it's never been thought of before.

Paul Bettany is the Lon Chaney of the '00s. Knight's Tale, Master and Commander, A Beautiful mind -- most don't realize it's all the same guy.

And Dunst so looks the part, it's hard to believe she wasn't the first choice for the role.

Looking forward to this . . . it prob'ly won't be a great movie, but it's about a GREAT tournament.

Re: Wimbledon

I thought maybe I had heard something about this and thanks for the reminder!  I am the huge tennis junkie although I havent played in about 5 years (My son being born :/)

I played avidly from about 1990 to 1999.  I was Rated at 4.0  (College players are ranked around 5.0 and above while pros are 6.5 to 7.0) But make no mistake there is a quantam leap from 4.0 to 5.0 mainly being the 2nd serve!

I love tennis.  One of the great mano mano sports and totally mental.  I cant think of any other sport that requires the mental toughness that tennis demands.  My favorite surface is hardcourt but I have played clay a ton of times and never played grass.

I took the Number 3 seed in San Diego County into a 3 set tie breaker in 4.0 division and my brother and I played doubles in a tourney once and took the Numbe 1 seeded team 3 sets (They got us in the end and this was our first time playing doubles together and my first competetively).

Im ranting.  What a great sport and workout.  Agassi is my current favorite.  I remember back in the early nineties that 7 of the top 10 players in the world were American.  Good times for American tennis (Agassi, Sampras, Change, Wheaton, Martin, Courier and I cant remember the other one)

Do you guys remember Conners at the US OPEN pulling off that crazy comeback show!?  Some of the best tennis I have ever witnessed!  Connors is my all time FAV player.

Re: Wimbledon

All time favorites would have to include Connors, J. McEnroe, Steffi Graf (greatest women's player ever, winner of the Golden Slam), Martina Hingis (she pooched an underhanded serve to Steffi Graf once... how can you not love that?), Agassi, Sampras (the best ever to play the game), Michael Chang (the fastest man alive... I just wish he could have won more frequently), and Chris Evert.

And how can you forget Richard Krajicek's famous quote, ranting that "80% of the women players are fat, lazy pigs", he got in a lot of trouble. So he apologized, and said 'I may have exaggerated a bit when I said that 80 per cent of the top women players are fat pigs. It's only 75 per cent.'
(I do not think someone would say something like that today!)

Re: Wimbledon

LOl I almost forgot that qoute!

Chrissy Evert was great. I grew to respect Navratilova however. Poor Chang. One of the greats but just couldnt get it done. (ONE FRENCH). JohhnyMAc is a great one although Ive always been a fan of the baseline game and not too fond of Serve and Volley.

I hated Hingis. Uccckk! I like Jennifer. Glad to see her back although I think thats coming to an end.

Re: Wimbledon

The Mac, Agassi, Sampras, Becker, Connors, and the legend in his spare time, Mats Wilander -- these are the guys who made me want to play seriously. I couldn't stand Agassi when he started -- too cocky, refused to play the big W -- but he humbled, worked hard, and turned into a true champ. The 2002 US Open final was KILLER; my favorite tennis match of all time (Agassi v. Sampras, if you dont know, and Sampras's last pro match).

Though, I'll say the most enjoyable tournament I ever watched was Wimbledon '89. While always a terrific show, for some reason, that year just seemed to have a magic that no other year has.

I myself am a 4.0, and I won a couple (very) small tourneys in my college days. Now I only play in a recreational league, but hey, I won today!

John -- Tim Mayotte.

Anyone remember that superb commercial with my two all-time favorites, Mac and Sampras, where Mac pulls Sampras into a warehouse and says "Mr. Sampras, do you know why we're here today?" and Pete says, sighingly, "I'm too nice . . ." Mac was conducting a bad boy clinic. Great stuff.

Re: Wimbledon

:D

Yes yes yes

What about Tim Mayotte? I agree, AGASSI at first was all cock and no walk. Gilbert turned his career around UGLY like. I often wonder how many SLAMS would ANDRE have if he took it serious from the get go? Dude wasted like 5 years not wanting to work.

Re: Wimbledon

Whatever do you mean?

Re: Wimbledon

Yes, Maria Sharapova is a beautiful. She's also a great competitor. She works hard on every point. Today she outplayed Serena at the power baseline game. Amazing.

John, you've got to get back on the court. I'm only a 3.5 (intermediate), but I only started playing three years ago. Since then, I've been addicted. I also play in a coupole soccer leagues, so I don't have as much time for tennis as I'd like. You're right that it's a huge mental game. I'm in better shape than all of my opponents because of my soccer conditioning, and I have better shots than most of my opponents, but I still lose most of the time to the more experience players. They have me beat on the mental game! Oh well, I'm still learning.

As for the movie, I'm looking forward to it, except I'm a bit peeved that the premise is fairly similar to a screenplay I started writing several months ago. Well, not completely similar, but still... if I'd only had Kirsten Dunst lined up.

Re: Wimbledon

Ill get back to playing again. Right now its weights and basketball. Great thing about Tennis is that you play until your like 70 (God willing). I dont have anyone really to play against right now (My bro lives about 35 miles south in UTC). I think if I started playing Id be back at 3.5 for sure (which is still quite competitive; serve is again key).

Not enough time in this life. :(

Re: Wimbledon

I wanted Sharapova to win (though if someone had told me in '87 that I'd be rooting for a Russian over an American . . . ). She's every bit as hot as Kournikova and actually has the tennis skills to deserve the hype. Kournikova was all flash, not much substance (yes, yes; I know she won some doubles), and I tired of her fairly quickly. Pretty girls are a dime a dozen. If that's all you got, then don't waste my time.

Re: Wimbledon

:D

I always wondered where your Russian accent came from. Im just glad neither of Williams sisters won; cannot even stand those biatches.

Re: Wimbledon

You've gotta love Gabriela Sabatini..remember her famous sounds as she hit the ball, almost orgasmic... She sounded better than most a the girls I went out with in college.

Re: Wimbledon

GREAT tournament.  The only thing I don't like about it is when it ends . . .  :'(

An especially good year, 2004.
