Will These Lights Work and This Setup Work?

i was thinking about getting 6 clamp utility light holders, 4 on stands, the ones at home depot...also dimmer knobs..

then getting 2 500 watt soft bulbs, 2 1000 watt bulbs, and the rest 100 watt's...

then getting with matte board at a craftshop, putting it on a post holder and using it with the lights, pointing the board at the scene and pointing the light towards the board(which is away from the scene)as like a softlight

and then using poster board holders and draping down thin soft white material(from craft store) and putting 500 watt or 1000 watt lights behind them, and control with dimmer knobs from home depot...

any thoughts?

Will it work...probably.

Will you have problems...definitely.

The reason people don't go to Home Depot and buy all their lighting equipment there is because it's not the best for video production. The more expensive lights that you are trying to avoid allow three important things: control, consistency, and quality. With a fresnel you can select whether to spot or flood it. Also you can get barn doors and softboxes for them. Lights designed for video production will have an accurate color temperature so you can keep that consistent with all your lights. And they are good quality so they won't fall apart after a couple shoots.

Yes you can use everything you listed to light. And if you're good at lighting, you can use everything listed there to make great looking video. It's not the gear that makes a good image, it's the artist behind it. But still, good gear gives the artist more options and more control.

very well said....i watched your training vids, and i believe that you sir are the master of eos dslr cams....lol

so i have 1 off topic question, what do you think about this kind of workflow...

1.shoot in 1080 24p with superflat setting
2.convert raw .mov file with mpeg streamclip using avid nxHD streamclip codec to mpeg 2
3.using grading, tint, or correction for desired look
4.export to mpeg 2 1080p with 23.996 2:3 pulldown

any suggestions?

thanks again!

Glad to hear our videos helped! :D

I haven't worked with Avid encoding. I do most of my stuff through Adobe Premiere and Media Encoder. Here's my workflow: http://nextwaveg.blogspot.com/2010/01/my-5d-mkii-pc-workflow.html

But from what you have listed, that should work okay.
