Hi,

Im about to buy the zoom H2 mic for some simple promotional video voice overs etc to be done in my home studio. And no, i dont have a seperate sound booth.

So will the H2 work with Vegas via the USB so that i can directly record to the time line in takes ?

Any other suggestions ?

Thanks

The H2 is great for what it does, but I wouldn't use it as a voice mic. It's omnidirectional, so it's going to pick up lots of background sounds you don't want. A hypercardioid would be better for voiceover work, I think.

I've used USB mics with Vegas fine, but not that model - as David J says, there's no reason to think it wouldn't work.

Thanks everyone.

I was just tryng to be sure it would work before i spent a wad of cash on ordering it from across the globe.

Regards

Yes it works in Vegas, but the style of mics will not be ideal for voice overs. A cheaper alternative if you just need a USB mic is the Blue Microphones Yeti or yeti Pro. I have not used the new pro, but have used the Yeti with decent results. The yeti runs $100-$150 and the Pro over $200. The pro can also bemused as an analog mic. Both have switchable patterns for different uses.

Hi,

I never knew the H2 is not so ideal for Voice Overs. Maybe because of its pick up patterns ?

But i need something thats wireless and because i use my 550d to shoot the video material.

I also want to use the mic outdoors or in actual locations. Thats why i picked Zoom H2. Because it works independently and doesnt need cords. Plus i can record from near the person while the camera is far away to defeat using anything thats cam mounted.

For my needs (Documentary/Promo Videos) and for recording on location without cumersome needs for wires. Will the zoom H2 Suit ?

Thanks

Again, the Zoom H2 is not the best choice for capturing cleanly the spoken words of your subject. For that you're better off with either a boom-mounted hypercardioid or a lapel mic, wired or wireless.

It's not wise to use any method of recording audio that does not allow you to monitor the sound with headphones. You could wind up with totally useless audio of a lengthy interview.

Hi David,

Im not using this for interviews. Mostly want to do a narrative over the video on my home workstation. Then i would also like to record ambient sounds or certain machinery etc or while a workman is using his gear. Then id like to record a person narrating / speaking from about 20 feet away from the camera. I need a general all purpose mic and dont have the budget to procure independent devices for each type of audio sitaution. In order of priority id like to capture....

1. People speaking in a factory,,,about their equipment infrastructure etc. Or a sports person speaking while standing at the side of a skating rink.
2. An official giving a statement from his desk in his office.
3. Recordings of traffic, factory, industrial sounds, and to do it with a 360Deg pick up pattern and probably 4 channel audio would be a plus ?

If i can pick up a lapel mic like you suggested (sounds like the cheapest option), can i hook it up to the Zoom H2 and get a good recording of voice when in exernal ambient situations ?

Thanks
