Will the DVX resale value hold up?

Hi all. Most of you will know that I am planning on the HVX entering my possession in the future. Thing is, that's looking like end of year for me here in New Zealand, after the September (Assumedly) release and then add a few months onto that. I'm at the point where I'm looking at a career shift into more video work, and I want to start producing stuff to gain experience and get a reel together eventually. I own a Canon XM2, and while this is a good camera, really it pales compared to the DVX.

Therefore I was contemplating an upgrade, within the next couple of months maybe and was wondering if you think the DVX's resale value will hold up reasonably well? When a new version is announced, do you feel that sales of the DVX will drop off majorly and so even finding a buyer, let alone one at a good price, will become very hard? I haven't been around the game long enough to have a good statistical analysis on how this usually works, so asking some of your more seasoned fellows.

My plan would be to flog off the XM2, get DVX, and flog that off when HVX comes around, hopefully not losing a lot of $$ in the process.

To give you a little more info, I do not make money with my camera (yet), if I did I probably would go an HDV route for now and then upgrade as I can recoupe the $$ spent.

Cheers
Aaron

Do you need a DVX in the upcoming months?

I don't think the DVX price value will drop drastically. Sure, lots of people want HD but there are a good number of people who would love to buy a DVX. I'm sure if you tried to sell a DVX right now, or say, the week the HVX comes out you won't get a great deal simply because everyone who wants to upgrade will be selling at that time.

Anyother time I imagine should prove to be about average. Just my opinion of course. I could be very wrong :D.

the new panna camera is 6 grand. thats out of the reach of a lot of people... factor in media and other accessories and it will be just a few who will jump on it. there will always be people who want the 100 AND the 100A... if you keep you cam in good condition, you will get a great value on it.

I am struggling with same issue. My gut says that lots of people will be selling their DVX to buy an HVX, and that we will see used prices drop to a curve closer to what we see with other cams like Sonys. Take a look at prices on PD150s now that lots of them are being replaced by the FX1 and Z1. OTOH, some people who buy used Sonys now may switch to buying used DVXs as prices get more comparable. Its not horrible, but we have to expect that used prices will drop maybe 20%(?). Now if Panny introduces a 16x9 DVX, all bets are off.

It's not about most people. It's about having more sellers than were selling before, and a few less buyers. I am gonna stick my neck out and guess that half of all used DVXs get sold thru eBay, so if five a week goes to 10 a week, that is enough to affect pricing quite a bit. If it goes to 100 all at once the week the HVX comes out, well that would take a while for the used market to absorb.

I feel the same as NO CA$H on this one. Yeh the HVX is a great camera but it is considerable more than a DVX when you consider you will also need at least 2 - 8gig P2 cards and upgrade your edit suite to handle HD..... I'm sticking with the DVX for at least another year, maybe two....

I'd recommend you buy a used DVX when you're ready to upgrade. The camera will have already depreciated, so you'd take less of a hit when you sell. This board is filled with people that have hardly used their DVXs and are all ready to upgrade to an HVX. I don't see any huge hurry for most people to ugrade to the HVX, but it'll be good for snapping up a lightly used DVX. You never know, you might hang on to the DVX longer than you think.

Barry, I was thinking along those lines too - get a used one. Hard to find here in New Zealand (PAL) but there will be some out there I'm sure.

I was focused a lot on the 100a, but I see that older model can be had for under $2k, maybe even 1600-1700. That is the right price for a used cam in my mind. Aza, if I find a PAL I will try to let you know.

Now I have to figure out why 90% of the camera sellers on eBay don't have any feedback, or it's pumped up. One guy even admits to preselling cams, and his last three feedbacks were that he couldn't ship and complete the transaction. I have bought a lot of stuff on eBay and never seen anything like the prosumer videocam area.

Everytime I put eBay down there are guys that slam me so I'll just give you a few words of advice...... "BE CAREFUL, if it's too good to be true...."
