will someone please stab michael bay with a sai

Michael Bay must die!

I assume your joking. So this is not a response to you Paul.

However I've noticed that tone from so many other people towards Michael bay. Yet I don't know what he personally has done to them. He's doing in his life what almost anyone ( there are exceptions of course) here would dream to do.

There just movies. Not humanitarian endeavors he needs to live up too. Michael bay's work ethic is "A" class, and he takes on extremely challenging production logistics that most people would pi$$ & $hit in their own pants if faced with the same massive production situations. Not talking about story here. Simply talking about craftsmanship and work ethic. He delivers the products he is contracted to do, and quite frankly the studios make their money back on investment.

Show business is after all, a business.

I've never liked it when directors/filmmakers publicly talk $hit about fellow directors/filmmakers. To me it comes across as low class and petty.

This isn't about directors dissing directors. This is fans bemoaning the fact that once again their childhood has been given to someone who has no respect/understanding of the source material. I can only hope that Bay is being controversial to generate publicity or that a joke has been taken out of context. It's one thing to update the vehicle models in Transformers to make them current (the first movie was kind of okay but didn't inspire me to even download 2 or 3) but to take away the very trait that gives the turtles their name and underpins the backstory of all the characters including the bad guys? I expect that pizza is off the menu too! I wonder, post-Fukushima has the nuclear industry put pressure on the producers...?

If this is true, the film is all ready a no-go for me. As a fan of the original comic, I want a "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" that is closer to the source material than the previously existing films, not further away from it!

I can understand the concern of people who followed that series. My self I did not have any interest it when I saw what it was. However I do understand the concern. As to Michael Bay. I notice your new here. This goes back many years on this board on Michael bay trashing, as well other directors. It often takes on a more angry & personal tone rather than a constructive one, which is absolutely pathetic ( the act and not the person ) in my opinion.

Directors/Filmmakers as well anyone in this trade, work their a$$'s off to get it close to right. Not necessary artistic all the time, however a product delivered to the screen. For instance, recently Zack Synder got a lot of $hit for his last film ( Sucker Punch ) here. Though disappointing for many- the hard work still is there. The craftsmanship is there at an "A" game level. So it didn't work, as many expressed here in harsh tones. However it's still an accomplishment to take an idea all the way through the multiple levels to the completed film where the odds are against you terribly in this industry/business. Kudos to anyone that can make it to an "A" game level of filmmaking opportunities. I think the odds are .05% for filmmakers to make it in general, something like that. ( Han Solo comes to mind " "Never tell me the odds! ...." ).

As I said above, I do understand the concerns of others about the TMNT mythos getting F'ed with. Hopefully the fans will express their concerns. The studios might or might not listen. In the end, it's their right to do so if they have the rights to the franchise.

I agree that it is not good form to bag directors for their idiosyncrasies and don't want to side-track into a debate because I'm essentially in agreement with you.

Bay-trashing goes well beyond this site, in fact it is something of a meme these days ('just add explosions'). I agree it is pathetic to bag someone for who they are but you can criticise them for what they do. Many directors including Uwe Bolle (I enjoy his antics more than his films but he has made a couple of good ones, with more social commentary hiding in there than some oscar winners), Zack Synder (i actually enjoyed Suckerpunch for what it was) and even Bay have copped a lot of flak they don't deserve, as well as a little they did. The fact what they do is hard shouldn't make them beyond criticism. In fact those doing the hardest jobs often cop the most criticism (try being the leader of a country). But it should be, as you say, criticism.

My own objection to what Bay is reported as intending to do with TMNT is not to do with filmmaking at all, it is to do with the business of hollywood-style production. And my objection is to a far wider group than just Bay, he is just the latest exponent. And that is: if you don't want to make TMNT then why buy the rights, thereby preventing anyone else from making it? Does 'Alien Ninja Fighters' really need to be called 'TMNT'?

It is one thing to change the language to make it more up-to-date and palatable to the current generation (with the diposable income to pay for the thing). It is one thing to change all the costumes to spandex, rubber latex (with nipples), leather or whatever new fangled material the fashion world is currently pimping. If you must, change pizza to salad to placate the health lobby. But if you don't want them to be teenage mutant ninja turtles then why not just make 'Alien Ninja Fighters' and save yourself the money spent on acquiring the rights and leave the TMNT property on the market? Why ruin the canon and prevent anyone else from making the movie for however many years the studio retains the rights? (making it difficult for the next director to reboot - to use the current buzz word...)

I'm not for constantly remaking the same films or even that fussed about TMNT (I will exercise the right not to watch, probably wouldn't have anyway - I'm a grown up now after all). There's a perfectly good live-action film already out there that captures the vibe of the era should I want to revisit. But I also don't have a problem with the fact that stories are being constantly reinvented - pre-copyright and screen rights that's how all the great stories has been passed on for millenia. But I do think if you are going to acquire the rights to a property for the purpose of reboot then it is necessary to find a new angle or interpretation in the canon (like Downey/Jude in Sherlock Holmes) rather than abolish it altogether. Otherwise it is not a reinvigoration, it is exploitation - borrowing a title in the hope of squeezing a couple of extra bucks out or even just a cynical shortcut to getting the funding in the first place. Bay films already make money so surely he doesn't need to do that.

Yeah it's just that barely anything from the source material applies now, so why even call it a tmnt movie. They are aliens and thus can't be turtles, unless they evolved millions of years ago built spaceship and flew off to colonize some other planet along with some giant hyper intelligent rat buddies. Then how would aliens be trained ninjas? they intercepted Japanese television feeds from across the galaxy? the only part of the name left that could apply is teenage, so in essence this movie should be called teenage aliens.

edit: and their names wont make sense either though they will most likely be named on earth but still...

Now it's been pointed out that this was not exactly Schindler's list to start off and the TV series was a little all over the place, but to go from that to this... come on mutation was the whole lynch pin of the series. If you are going to change it don't make them aliens make them from dimension X like the brain. Ah well what can you do.

to be honest I was back defending Bay for a while as you can always expect him to give you an action filled exploitation ride it's what he does. but that does not take away the rights of the original fans of the source material, the people who made it profitable, made possible to make into a movie have full right to complain when it has been taken so far in another direction that it's barely recognizable. I have a few friends who could not understand my issues with what was done to the batman character by nolan, and what bay had done to transformers, now don't get me wrong I appreciate the fact that they got made, they just weren't representing the characters and franchises I had come to know and love the way I would have preferred, fair enough. but after this announcement one of them told me he now fully understands my pain as tmnt was his favorite show and movies as a child and is furious with this change.

I'll watch it, won't be the Ninja turtles as far as I'm concerned but I'll give it a chance as some quirky kids alien fighting team movie. It's not the end of the world, dumb but not awful, though who knows with all this negativity it could just end up being his best movie (aside from the rock, and con air).

play nice!

I don't feel sorry for Michael Bay, or George Lucas for that matter.
They make their living better than most filmmakers. They're not stupid. They know what decisions will impact fanboys and how they will react. It's not rocket science.
So when Michael Bay gets torn to shreds by fanboys because he can't make a movie called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles without changing them to aliens even though it's based on a concept that's worked very well for the past quarter century, I think he deserves getting a little heat from the film's supposed target audience. He's a grown man, he can take it.

But that's me.

I can only speak for myself but why I hate Michael Bay is that he does the very thing I hate in directing or film production.... He has replaced creative well thought out script and dialogue with bags of money on SFX. I hate the trend of pouring more money into something rather than make it right and tell a proper story. On top of that his target of crappifying seems to be all of the shows I loved as a child. The man must be stopped. I will never see a Michael Bay picture as I vote with my wallet but neither he or the studio will care because he is making lots of money.

I also hear he is an asshole to his actors and crew but that isn't a personal experience so I have to take gossip with a grain of salt.

No one even knows that they are actually going to be aliens, right? It was a one-line throwaway comment from the producer, not the script writers (Art Marcum and Matt Holloway of Iron Man) or the director (Johnathan Liebsman).

Actually Simon West directed Con Air.
Michael Bay won't direct the new Ninja Turtles movie either, but it'll be produced by his company, Platinum Dunes. You know the one that produced all those horror remakes like Friday 13th, Elm Street, Amityville Horror, The Uninvited (uninspired remake of the brilliant A Tale of Two Sisters).
Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: LA, Wrath of the Titans, Texas Chainsaw: The Beginning, Darkness Falls) is attatched to direct the new Ninja Turtles movie about them being aliens instead of mutants.

Will you still watch it?

He seems fairly into the idea, wanting kids to believe they exist, and they have even changed the title to teenage ninja turtles I believe. But you are correct nothing is set in stone at this point... hopefully.

I'll watch it.... at home on my TV when it's released to cable, or maybe at a friends house if it's on... not really the outraged get up and leave kind of guy... anymore.

edit: I guess I just lump con air and rock together, same era so similar, not a lot of substance but very entertaining and unintentionally funny.

As far as hate is concerned, I spend as little time hating Michael Bay as I do watching Platinum Dunes movies.

I'm not their audience and I've got better things to do with my time.

"I believe" being the key word there as well as "you are correct nothing is set in stone..."

then again seems like it's a title Bay is using...

http://www.shootfortheedit.com/forum/showthread.php?10389-Ninja-turtles

though it's just a post title...

Still he seems to be making them aliens(his words) or with a different back story, if he does that he'll have to remove mutant from the title otherwise it will not make sense, neither will turtles as they are a species that evolved from common ancestors on this planet and share features from them, so unless they are aliens that take the form of species on this planet, or evolved and flew away like I said it doesn't make sense.

Honestly this is not about what it is but what it is sounding like, if it made sense I couldn't care about the changes but if he is making them alines then a large portion of the name and original concept no longer apply unless you really stretch it.

No one wants nothing but yes men stroking their ego and telling them everything they do is good as that breeds bad quality work and a lack of drive to push yourself to new creative limits, and on the other side plain harsh criticism with no attempt to be constructive or helpful is equally harmful. We shouldn't praise people for mediocre work especially when it cost millions of dollars to create, the original fans and future fans deserve the best we can give them, and if people think you are heading in the wrong direction and are screaming all over the internet about it, one way or the other you should listen to them as it can be helpful in a number of ways.

meh my only hoarse in this race is artistic integrity and proper translation of media from on medium to another while maintaining the source material's soul if you will.

to clarify I'm probably one of the only ones to say in this thread that we have no idea what quality the movie will be and that it could be great, the thing we are discussing though is will it be a good TMNT movie and there is a big difference.

yours or his?

if you are referring to the title I herd he was changing it before as it no longer applies, and just found that post trying to verify what I herd. though it doesn't by any means. I'm only adressing him saying they are aliens that's all I need to find these issues that don't make sense, if he wasn't doing that all he needs to say is they aren't aliens, or they are still mutants and 90% of the uproar would be gone.

edit: seems like Bay has just misspoke and hasn't properly corrected himself, could be the turtles are now from another dimension... better, and that they were transformed through the ooze which was alien in origin in the first place(not sure if that's the case in the comics but...), and Krang is going to be the villain, now if you have krang in his massive suit, done well, and if they have the technodrome then I will be a happy camper could be the worst movie ever but if you have those elements my childhood will be satisfied, I won't be proud of myself but I'll deal with it.
