Will someone invent a smaller recorder please?

... For things like weddings all I need is 320Mbps MP3. But I agree we need a super tiny recording device for the year 2015 and beyond.

Ditto John's comment. MP3 is a distribution format, NOT an original production recording format. Media is too cheap to skimp out on false economy.

I disagree that it would only serve a small niche market. I would use it for general corporate, interviews, weddings, commercials, documentaries...everything.

Wireless adds a hazard unnecessary considering today's technology, and the potential for interference is getting worse and worse.

You get to pay extra for small and high quality, and if that floats your boat, ok. The linked hardware is cheapo stuff and even the OP said it sounded bad. Or you can spend a lot and get versatile equipment that will sound good has internal recording AND monitoring.

You are correct about the hazards of wireless, but at least I get to monitor it for issues as it is recorded. So pick your favorite formula for a bad outcome; wireless with monitoring or remote recording without. Are you feeling lucky?

I've been lucky for several years on Zoom H2s and redundancy. I would love to upgrade to dual tracks and XLR. Doing weddings, monitoring is useless, as if there is a problem I'm not going to stop the wedding.

Question, though. I read that the sm57 would work with the Tascam since it is dynamic. I would still need to add phantom power, right?

No, dynamics don't run on phantom. And mics like the vocal oriented sm57 and sm58 will work fine. The RE50 series and the Sennheiser MD 46 would be ok as well. Just keep in mind that dynamics are meant to be very close to the source. Combine that with the typically weak preamps in cheap recorders, and you have a recipe for some noisy recording.

So if you want to go dynamic you should probably look for models using "rare earth" magnets. I know the 58 also comes as one and Heil makes a few. The PR-40 (basically Heil's version of the RE50) has almost as hot an output as a condenser.
