Will ME66 be too hot for my camera?

I am about to buy a DVX100AE and was recommended a ME66 K6 mic to go with this by a very experienced and reputable firm of film makers and suppliers here in London. I have seen on a discussion that people are saying this is NOT a good mic for this camera - it is too "hot". Do they mean the 100 - is it actually okay on the latest model the 100AE? Why was I told this was a great mic for the camera?

Thanks for your help.

Confused of London! :o

Re: Will ME66 be too hot for my camera?

The At4073a is a MUCH better choice for a DVX. I've had both and the me66 was WAY too hot. Sennheiser makes a "red dot" version with attenuated output to help with the problem. You can send a normal me66 to Sennheiser and they'll either do the mod for free or else it's something like $17 USD plus shipping.

I have the original dvx. The audio section of the dvx was incredible to start with and I doubt there were many changes in the newer version.

Having owned both mics I can also tell you that the 4073a is a much better SOUNDING mic. MUCH better. Here in the states an me66 is $450 now and the 4073a is $530... and with that price difference it isn't even close. Hell, if the me66 was HALF the price of the 4073a I'd still go with the AT.

If you hear them both A/B you'll wonder why Sennheiser is letting Audio Technica stomp 'em so badly. The AT is better then an me66 and an me67 put together (better sound AND long reach) so it's a bargain.

I'd argue that the 4073a is the best bang for the buck shotgun mic available.

Okay - thanks for your help. Are you saying then that the 4073a is NOT too "HOT" for this camera (I guess by this we are talking about levels of outputs etc - don't really understand it technically).

Re: Will ME66 be too hot for my camera?

Yes. That's what I'm saying. While the 4073a is still a very sensitive mic... and probably MORE sensitive then the me66... it's output doesn't seem to be as high. For some readers this won't make sense because sensitivity and output are directly related. All I can tell you is plug each one of these mics in a dvx and then put them at equal distance from the speaker. Next try going from a whisper to a loud voice and in my experience, the 4073a hears the whisper more clearly and handles the increased volume more effectively. It almost seems like there is an anamoly with the me66 when used with a dvx. I described the sound as being "expanded". The opposite of compressed. Quiet seems too quiet and loud seems too loud. Try it and you'll see.

With ANY mic other then a dynamic or insensitive condenser make sure your internal levels are at -50db.

the 4073 have very hot out to go directly , but 5 resistors inside your cable would do the trick

Thanks for your help. Is there a good website that reviews these mics, and where you can compare tech specs?
Thanks...
