Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

I understand that Sony uses a "lubricated something"-form of tape as opposed to Panasonic using a dry form. If I capture my Panasonic tapes in a Sony aren't I going to contaminate them with dirty Sony Goo? Also, When I put them back in my DVX, is there going to be a problem with the "Now gooey" Panasonic tape getting stuff on my heads?

Please let me know...I'm pretty sure I heard an array of answers to a similar question before.Tim

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

Whats weird is I used all different types of tapes from lube to dry and my DVX seems to be holding on pretty good. My camera is almost 2 years old now. I don't see any sort of problem, I hope not.

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

Quick answer, Yes it will "goo" them up, You'll have to use a tape head cleaner, which (as talked about in these forums) is abrasive and can eventually hurt the heads.

Edit: But people do, do it, as BlueSpider has noted...I just didn't want to risk it based on responses here.

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

Slimothy, are you shooting Panny tapes in a Sony cam, or digitizing Panny tapes from a Sony cam/deck? If so, may I ask why the digitized tapes are ending up back in the DVX? Just curious...

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

I´ve used Sony tapes only in my camera for over a year and never had a problem. ;D

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

I always clean the heads in my camera. Clean the heads once in awhile if you choose to do what I do. Yes, I don't recomend using cheaps tapes like I do. Only if you're crazy like me.

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

Tape for this camera is so cheap anyways! I mean I pay around $5 a tape for the Panasonic MQ's. People who shot on Beta SP know tape cost! I say at this price, Use the best, and use it only once (no rerecycling tapes) I may be a bit over cautious, but my philosophy is the virgin tape passes my camera heads only once, and that's it. I've only had one giltch in the 300 tapes I've used so far. The one time I played back a sony wet lube (figures, my luck) it gummed all up and wouldnt play back anything until i cleaned it. So take it for what it's worth, it's only my opinion...

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

I use both sony and panny tapes (tapes supplied by production houses) on my DVX and so far so good...

cross my fingers!

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

I don't have a problem paying 5 bucks a tape... But I happen to have a Sony TRV sitting around that I would like to capture with. I don't want to put my Panny tapes in the Sony if it will mess up the heads on my dvx by putting them back in the Dvx after capturing on a Sony....

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

Btw: rush, what kinda DVXuser discount would I get on the Portabrace rain slicker ;D Also, how effective are those in keeping dirt/dust/water out?

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

Silmothy,
Oh, I'm sorry, ok, I misunderstood your question.. I actually do use my sony TRV to capture. But, I had an engineer at the tv station i work for clean the heads before I put a MQ in it. And I wont put any other type of tape in it now besides the MQ. Although I have never had the need to put the tape back into my DVX, so I dont know if it would cause any trouble to do so... But yes, you can use your TRV as long as you clean the heads before doing so...

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

Oh man! Let me cause more confusion now.

Here's what I do. I shoot Panny tapes in the DVX. Only virgin ones. But, I usually need to shoot and capture only 15 minutes worth of tape in one session. I then captue with a cheapo JVC camcorder.
Then, I use the tape again in the DVX, but not where I previously recorded. I just pick up where I left off, therefore only using virgin tape until the tape is full.
Okay. Is this mystery lube going to somehow screw me even though I do it this way?

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

hmm actyually im in the same position, I have a TRV that I used only Sony tapes with and I use the MQ tapes on my DVX. Whould capturing with the TRV 'contaminate' the tapes so I cant reuse them?

which opesn up another question...

DOes re-using tapes (blacking them out) degrade the quality of the footage?

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

Blacking tapes does not de-grade the quality.

I'm curious to see how the rest of this discussion pans out.

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

Hey guys,

I just wanted to put in my two cents because I'm a little confused about this discussion as well. I capture my DVX tapes with a consumer cam, and the only way I can see Sony goop getting on my DVX tapes is if I used a "used" Sony (or whichever brand) cam that someone ran cheap quality tapes through. There would be no problem with tape lube getting on the DVX heads if you either:

A. Clean the newly aquired "used" cams heads before you digitize the footage from your DVX tapes.

B. You buy a brand new consumer cam for a couple hundred and only run the MQ's through it, not the cheapy consumer ones with the wet lube.

Hope this helps.

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

Very well said Elle, That's what I was trying to say really...:)

The only thing I would add to that is that just because the tapes aren't "cheap" doesnt mean they are dry lube. As far as I know only the Panasonic MQ series are dry lube. Please correct me if I'm wrong though...

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

The PQ's are supposed to be dry lube also, the Panasonic guy told me at the Videomaker East Show.

Re: Will I ruin my Tapes/heads

Aren't Fuji tapes also dry lubed? I've been told that they will work fine in the DVX.
