Will I need a deck?

I'm likely buying a DVX100a as soon as canon fails to release an XL2 at NAB. I've never worked for more than 10 bucks an hour, so obviously the price tag is somewhat devestating.

Is it really necessary to use a deck to edit? The DVX100a should have device control, but I suppose it's probably better to save wear and tear on the vtr by using a deck. Still, the last thing I want to do is spend all this money only to find that I need to spend more...

Do any of you edit in an NLE without a deck, or is it really pretty much necessary to use one? When I've edited with cheap 1ccd cams and even a gl2, I haven't used a deck.

Re: Will I need a deck?

It is not "necessary". It's a great idea, but not absolutely mandatory, you can of course use your DVX to capture your footage, etc. It will put a lot more wear & tear on your $3400 camera though. If you have access to a cheap 1-CCD cam or a GL2, you might consider using those as your deck instead of the expensive DVX.

What's the cheapest you can buy a deck for? If low end mini-dv cams are cheaper, how much is the least one of them can be found for?

Re: Will I need a deck?

Why should I worry so much about wear and tear on the camera? If it's well built, shouldn't it hold up okay to having footage captured off it? My old digital 8 has held up great and has had a ton of use.

I can't understand what it is about the DVX100a that makes it so you can't use non-panasonic tapes and you need to use a deck so as not to put too much wear on it...I thought this was a well built camera?

When something costs $300, like a Digital-8 camera, we tend not to worry too much about it -- words like "disposable" come to mind.

When it costs $3400, you start thinking about protecting your investment.

There's nothing fragile about the DVX, you can use it as a capture deck if you want, but many of us use a deck to keep their camera free from unnecessary head wear.

Re: Will I need a deck?

You could find yourself a really cheap miniDV camera to use as a deck. i'll be using my little panasonic miniDV as a deck. check Frys. A friend told me they've got some really cheap miniDV cameras selling for around/under $200.
