Will HD cameras ever drop in price?

I often wonder this, as I'm starting to spend money on lights, sound, etc. I really want an HD camera, but I can't spare $8,000 for the camera and memory cards. As long as the DVX is still sold at $3,100 -- I don't really see the HVX dropping into the somewhat affordable price range.

Remember, prior to the HVX, getting anything beside HDV in the camera realm would run you well over $75,000 for the whole setup, and of course you would also need to invest in the infrastructure to use that HD in your workflow, like decks, etc...

and your costs for hd will not just be the camera. you'll also need to include increased post production.

Of course! There's already the Sanyo for about $1000. Wait a few years, and you'll be able to get an HD camera for $500.

Of course, you probably meant, "will cutting edge (semi-)professional cameras ever drop in price?" You can rest pretty well assured that there'll always be a camera you want that'll be more than you can afford.

As people have said here, the issue with the HVX is that it does bring a number of key capabilities from the $75,000 price range to the under-$10,000 price range... brings these features into the realm of possibility for many people for the first time. Those folks, however, see the HVX as the very expensive end of "affordable cameras", while professionals see the HVX as the extremely cheap end of HD cameras. It requires a bit of perspective shift...

But rest assured, though HVX brings many Varicam features to the "cheap end", a new improved Varicam will be out soon, with features that'll trickle even later to the next handheld...
