"IN A RUN UP to the next generation console war between Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Bill Gates said that HD-DVD and Blu-ray are not important, since they represent the last generation of optical media anyway. While many people overlooked the statement, that's pretty much right on target....

"So, what technology is going to win the optical standards war? The answer is flash memory. If you're asking yourself why, the answer is fairly simple and that's ease of use, plus a continuously falling price and sky high capacity."

Yes I saw that too :)

In my opinion, flash will never win because its not profiteable for the industry. Downloads are still a long way to go, and even that hurts retailers.

Its like saying electric and solar based energy is a lot more viable than petrol. It is, but since there's hardly any profit in it, it doesn't make business sense to develop it.

Or, worse still, its like curing cancer and AIDS. Its a lot more profitable to treat the disease for years than cure it. Sorry to paint things so ugly, but that's the way I see it.

WEll i jsut want my 128Gig P2 card already. WEll bill, get your lazy charity giving ass on it....

I don't know that his reasoning is fully formed, but the germ of the idea is accurate. Solid state is the future, optical is interim. And I'm with Timur, let's have our 128gb cards today!
