Will FCPX copy my files?

I've never used FCP but I have played with iMovie and iPhoto and I don't use them because they like to copy my files to their own folder/structure. I hate that. Leave it where I put it and don't make a duplicate. No need to copy to your own file structure.

If FCPX does this I have a feeling no matter how great it is otherwise, I won't use it.

Well unless someone around here is one of the beta testers, I guess we'll all be waiting to get answers to questions like this. There arent going to be many answers today.

What footage type are you talking about? FCP 7 will of course make ProRes copies of footage that has to be ingested and transcoded. But if it's simply footage ready to edit it will link to wherever you have it on your hard drive- no copying required...

iMovie makes little preview movies because of the filmstrip previews it generates, much like selecting thumbnails to view in the bin in FCP creates files somewhere. I hope they've circumvented this somehow.

As far as I can extrapolate, FCP X will ingest and background render all non-native footage. I would assume that this means it will create copies of your media. Whether or not it does this in its own folder structure or if it creates all the proxies etc. in the same source folder remains to be seen.
