Will Digital Film Tools reduce resolution?

Thinking about getting Digital Film Tools plugin, but in Scott Billup's book on Digital Moviemaking, he notes that some plugins add additional compression, reducing quality of image. Don't have much experience with this stuff, just want to know if DFT does this. If i missed a thread on this already, sorry. thanks

Re: Will Digital Film Tools reduce resolution?

Anything that modifies the actual image and that needs to be re-saved will likely have some compression loss unless you're using a non-lossy compression such as Animation codec. This applies to color correction and other functions.
Even playing out in realtime to firewire will require a re-compression if it's been modified.
In most cases this isn't much of a problem but if you palnned to bounce between a number of programs you might consider a lossless codec.

Thanks. Sorry to have to show my ignorance, but what is lossless codec, and how would I integrate it into FCP? I'm planning on shooting a little feature, burn to DVD and enter into a local film festival. Just trying to get best quality. Thanks in advance.

There are very few truly Lossless compression codecs of which the animation codec is one.
The reality though is I do't think you need to go crazy. Run a test and compare before and after results with standard DV format. If you were saving and, reloading, changing and resaving multiple times then it will add up but with only a single re-compression the loss shoudln't be noticeable.
