Me and my family are blessed to have not been directly affected.

I've been following this and I'm sorry to see this happen, but I'm happy to hear that you're doing well.

Hi Shaun, obviously not in Victoria at the moment but to see my home state burn is heartbreaking, I just watched the Ten new report with Mal Walden who also had to read the incoming feed that his friend Brian Naylor had died in one of the fires. For non Australians, Brian Naylor was a stalwart for news in the state of Victoria spanning generations, a man that could be trusted - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Naylor_(broadcaster). Im gutted.

And on top of that one country town that I truly loved, a place of many wonderful memories has been totally destroyed. The people of Marysville have always been so accommodating to visitors and its a sad loss.

And some of these fires were deliberately lit, to those people I say your day will come, and in the mean time run.

Shaun:

So sad to hear. As a lifelong Southern Californian, I too have experienced fires like this almost every year for most of my life. Our cycle every year is come out of Summer, all of the brush is dry tinder, Santa Ana winds begin, fires start and go crazy, causing a few billion dollars worth of damage and lives lost, winter comes, few weeks of big rain, mudslides with a few more hundred millions of dollars damage, shake, rinse and repeat.

Makes one realize that material possesions are nothing and making it through alive is what matters. My prayers are with the people of Victoria.

Dan

just seen this in our national television, sad to hear about so many life and community losses. Hope everything gets ok.

Death toll now 108 and rising, just terrible. Hard to watch the people interviewed on the news who haven't been able to contact their family.

Tears stream down my face last nite as I lay bed and watch the late news.

Today as of 4.00pm the toll is now at 126.

The feeling i'm getting right now is, man, I wish I could just get up there and help or do something. The whole thing is like a dream, I'm still having trouble coming to grips with the sheer enourmity of the whole event.

Are the fires arson?

It's looking like some were deliberately set, yes.

A Victoria state police spokesman told Reuters by telephone late on Monday the toll had risen to 171 from about 135 hours earlier. He said the toll would almost certainly rise further.

Police believe some of the fires, which razed rural towns near the country's second biggest city, Melbourne, were deliberately lit and declared one devastated town a crime scene.

Man, what the **** is wrong with people?

What makes someone do that?

Weren't the recent fires (last years) in California arson too?

There are some sick people out there to instigate something like this. Unfortunately our society has a lot of people who are just warped and get off on causing this sort of death and destruction.

Very tragic.

I'm fairly depressed by all this, today it seems there are some other smaller rural towns under direct threat today. The fires haven't been contained as of yet and have razed through hundreds and thousands of hectares bush and rural farm land. As the week progresses the fires will pick up momentum again as the winds will begin to strengthen and turn warm northerly and the temps will be back into the mid 30's again. All the firefighting crews have there work cut out over the next few days and pray that is gets no worse.
BTW, the death toll is expected to go past 300, our states worst ever peace time disaster. Everyone you speak to and see around my area are simply gutted.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

My thoughts and well wishes are with you Shaun. It's tough too see this happen as Dan mentioned. It happens here in California all too often and it's even much more upsetting when you find out it was deliberate.

Stay safe.

Still fires burning and temps are about to soar once more.

So many people from all over the world have been giving to rebuild the devastated areas. Russell Crowe rallied the gumleaf mafia and the money is flowing. Sometimes the warmth of Australians blows me away.
