Widescreen?

Shot footage on a DVX100b with letter box enabled. Using premiere pro CS4. When I drag the footage to the timeline and view it in the program monitor the video clips are centered around a black box leaving black bars to the right and left of the footage. Exported to DVD same thing no wide screen, I end up with a picture surround by black bars....... Any ideas?

I chose wide screen 16:9 when I stated the project, and have letter box enabled on my cam??

Hi, you should select a 4:3 project if you filmed letterbox, the camera actually films 4:3 with added black bars to the top and bottom.

your if you choose a 16:9 project, you need to size the video to fit (but probably at a loss in quality)

As with above; if you shot letterboxed and went into a 16:9 project, you'll need to stretch out your clips in the timeline under the "motion" setting under the "effects" tab. Just resize to whatever fits, I'm not sure what the number is.

Since it sounds like you already have your project cut, you don't have to go through every clip and resize them. I'm fairly certain you can make a new sequence, put the existing sequence into the new timeline and resize the whole thing at once.

Thanks alot. So If I start filming with letter box disabled and choose 16:9 will I still see the same bars to the right and left? Or will premiere be able to make the adjustments accordingly without suffering a loss in quality?

What's happening when you record letterbox with the DVX100 is that it's recording a 4x3 image, and the camera is slapping black bars on the top and bottom. It's still true 4x3. If you want true widescreen, shoot in I believe "Squeeze" mode. When you do that, the camera is shooting true 16x9, but "squeezing" it into a 4x3 image. When you go to ingest it into Premiere, choose the DV Widescreen option, and Premiere will recognize it for what it is and stretch it back out to 16x9 during the ingest process.

An added bonus of shooting squeeze is you don't lose any resolution (letterbox, once you get rid of the bars, is 720x360, squeeze is still 720x480.)

Not exactly. It's higher-resolution than cropping/uprezzing 4:3 footage in your NLE, but it's still a crop and uprez itself -- it will not give you the same resolution as native 16:9 chips, or if you used the anamorphic adapter on the DVX.

Personally, at this point, I think they should disable the letterbox mode.
