Hi all,
I've seen a lot of films lately with widescreen that covers almost half of the tv. You know the bars are bigger than normal. how do i accomplish this with premiere.
Thanks
Aman

Re: widescreen

For a quick custum matte, I just create a new Title Item. Use the rectangle tool to make black rectangles on the top and bottom. You can make them in any size you want, to fill as much or as little of the screen as you want.

Re: widescreen

Look in the video effect folder for an effect called "clip." It will let you create a precise letterbox.

Re: widescreen

Also if you have photoshop or after effects available to you then you can actually make a matte in there with the rulers you can see exactly what size you want and then import into premiere. An extra step but it allows you to be precise to the mm. Unfortunately Premiere doesn't have rulers yet... maybe in version 2.0?

Yes... clip is precise but it is a pain to add the effect and then render it out on everyclip. If you do it this way with the "clip" effect, export a final DV AVI (or nest the final program in Ppro 1.0 or higher) then apply "clip" effect to the entire timeline. Much faster and doesn't effect the orginal edit clip file. For 6.5 users the matte on the highest track is definately the way to go for speed and ease of use.

Also, keep in mind what you are seeing is not 16:9 [1.85] - It's 2.35 [Real movie widescreen size] So it would need to be a custom matte.

And I for one wish all DVDs were that glorious size. :D

Re: widescreen

I've just started making some Widescreen DVDs this way (I have a client who loves the black bars... "makes it look like film, man...") So I just put some post-it notes on my monitor where the bars are from a Widescreen studio DVD (I think it was Open Water) and then went into premiere, created a title matte that was the same dimension as my two post-it note guides on my monitor.

If you want, I can email you the Premiere 6.5 title file of the Widescreen Matte. PM me with your email address.
