Widescreen with IDVD?

I need some help!

Alright, I just finished a little project in 16:9 (anamorphic) and was able to export it fine as a quicktime file. I put it in IDVD, the program that comes with the Mac, and it does not give me any options to convert the 16:9 so it fits a normal sized TV. It pretty much turns it back into squeeze mode. I am wanting to keep it in 16:9 but be able to play it with a DVD on a normal TV (like they do with the movies, having it letterboxed to fit the TV). Can IDVD do this? Any suggestions? If IDVD can't, what program should I get that can? Thanks![/

Re: Widescreen with IDVD?

..as long as you flag the .mpg file as 16:9 either in the original authoring program, or in the dvd authoring program, the dvd player should automatically letterbox it for you if its set u to be playing to a 4:3 tv, and not a 16:0 one. so it will looked squeezed until you authour the dvd, and play it back.. test it by writing the dvd folders to disk and test on your pc, or just burn a disc, it will be fine if its flagged 16:9 and the dvd player is set up right.

I believe iDVD is to basic for doing letterboxing unless a 4:3 masked letterboxed video file is used ...not positive though

You can modify, add, or remove files from the later versions of iDVD (it is under one of the tabs) so you can use QT Pro DVD encoder to make the file, in principal, and then add the tagged MPEG2 file.

In reality, heavy lifting DVD projects are usually done in DVD Studio Pro. There, the encoder has a wide range of options for handling 16:9 content.

Re: Widescreen with IDVD?

If you exported your Quicktime from a 16x9 anamorphic sequence, then the file should already be tagged as a 16x9 aspect ration.

I imagine iDVD doesn't "preview" in 16x9 mode, but I bet if you burned a test disc and tested it in a DVD player it would show as 16x9. Even though iDVD is a "consumer" level application, it doesn't make sense that it wouldn't support 16x9 because consumer handycams have had an anamorphic option for years.

If your test iDVD disc looks squeezed even on a DVD player, then I suggest investing in DVD Studio Pro. With v2 and v3 you can export your iDVD file into DVD SP, and then customize as much as you want. You can basically do anything in DVD SP that you see in the Hollywood DVDs.

It is stupid, but iDVD doesn't support the import of MPEG2 files, only married quicktimes. I guess Apple figures if you have FCP4 and Compressor, then you must have gone all out and bought DVD SP too.

Probably right. In the scheme of things, if you are doing client based DVDs, then DVDSP probably should be in your tool box anyway.

Re: Widescreen with IDVD?

Yeah, I put a 16:9 anamorphic file into iDVD and it ended up showing it like you would see it in the viewer of your DVX100, just squeezed. When I play the DVD on a wide screen TV, then I am fine, but when it is on a normal TV, then there are problems.

Well, I guess DVD SP will get in line of my things to buy when I win the lottery next!

Try doing what some DVDs do. Make a widescreen and 4:3 version and then just include both in the DVD.

FWIW, the new iDVD4 uses the same encoding engine as DVDSP... it's all done in QuickTime, whether you use Compressor, DVDSP's built-in encoder or iDVD.
