Widescreen matte - please help!

Does anyone have a jpeg or tiff file of a widescreen matte that they have made and used?

Here's the deal -

I'm editing a 4:3 piece that I want to be in widescreen. I started out using the widescreen matte in FCP effects, but found that the matte doesn't apply to transitions like dip to color when the color is, say, white, and I really need for everything to be behind the widescreen matte.

So, I made a matte in Photoshop by exporting a still image from FCP with the matte filter in place, and then extracted from there. Seemed to work pretty well, except now there is a very noticeable line between the matte and the image, especially noticeable when dipping to black. Switching back to the FCP widescreen matte is problematic now because it seems to affect my other filters, such as soft edges.

I'm probably being very dumb and dense about this, but I'm in that 11th hour mode (actually, it's about 9:45), where nothing is clear and everything is dumb.

Help if you can.

Thanks.

Just do your editing then make a new sequence, drag your edit sequence into that new sequence. Right click on the new sequence - OPEN IN VIEWER
in the player view window pick MOTION>CROPPING and go like 16 on the top and bottom.
The way you are doing it is too hard....

An alternate method: Place a black slug above your footage on the timeline, add a rectangular mask shape to the slug, and adjust it to your desired aspect ratio. This method has the added benefit of allowing you to recompose your footage within the matte -- say, adjusting the clip up or down -- unlike the "widescreen" filter or crop options, which create mattes that are part of the clip and thus move with it if you try to recompose the shot or do a post-zoom on it. (The widescreen filter at least lets you offset the clip up or down within the matte, but doesn't allow for post zooming).
