Widescreen issue

I was trying to figure out why the raw file from the camera looks like the real widescreen in my computer but once I render it either to a another avi, an mov or wmv file, it changes the proportions. The raw file looks stretched out to the sides but the rendered files do not. Is there a way to change this? Is it because it will naturally become widescreen when viewed on a tv (16:9) but not on the computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean about the timeline set up. I know that I have the project properties in vegas set up to NTSC DV 24p (720x480, 23.976 fps). I also tried the one with widescreen. When I render should I be clilcking on the box that says 'Stretch video to fill output frame size' or no? I have tried with and without so far with no luck.

This is what it says in the description box before I render it:
Audio: 64 Kbps, 44,100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo.
Video: 23.976 fps, 720x480, Quality VBR 90, WMV V9 Compression.
