Widescreen Cropping

When I render a DVD in anamorphic NTSC widescreen and crop to 2.35:1, and then burn it to DVD using DVD Architect, the black bands from cropping don't match up with the black made by the DVD player on the TV. That means there are 2 shades of black. When I compare my cropping to similar cropping on anamorphic DVDs, the cropping is the same, but on the professional anamorphic DVDs the black bands match the black on the TV. The only way I can figure to remedy this is to just render the video in fullscreen and crop for 2.35:1, instead of using anamorphic widescreen and cropping. I could just do this, but I want anamorphic just for the sake of being anamorphic (because nothing screams "pro" more than anamorphic!), and in case I show my DVD on a widescreen television. So all I need to know is how to match the blacks, and if there isn't a way, then I'll just deal with fullscreen and cropping.

Some help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Widescreen Cropping

The black bands made by the DVD player are IRE 7.5. The black bands “made” by Vegas – by cropping and revealing the black, empty timelines below – are IRE 0. This is why the inner set of black bands are darker than the outer when you watch it on a TV.

Cropping to 2.35:1 doesn’t get you any advantage over masking the widescreen material (already 16:9) – it renders out as masked 16:9 -- so mask the widescreen material with black bands set to IRE 7.5 (you can do this with the Color Corrector).

The resulting DVD will still be anamorphic, but the black bands should match – at least better.

Re: Widescreen Cropping

Thank you very much!
All I need to know now is how do I change the IRE settings in color correction to effect the black bands and not the image itself?

Re: Widescreen Cropping

You can use a track effect on the mask track. It’s the little symbol that’s the same as the effects symbol on a clip, except that it applies the effect to the entire track.

Re: Widescreen Cropping

I still can't figure it out. I searched the help file and it told me to change it from 0 to 7.5 in Video Scopes (which didn't work).

Can you lead me through how to do this step by step?

Re: Widescreen Cropping

Broacast Colors presets. Pick one of the 7.5 presets. Try lenient; if it doesn't match, go to conservative.

Re: Widescreen Cropping

PM your e-mail address to me and I'll send you a project file with a mask on a track at 7.5 setup.

Re: Widescreen Cropping

I sort of see what you mean, but I'm going to wait until you send me the file before I do any rendering.

My last question: Do I add the Broadcast Colors to an empty video layer at the bottom track so it effects that layer, or should I just apply it to all video layers?

(sorry about mixing terms like layer and track, I'm really used to photoshop terms :P)
