Widescreen Aspect Overlays

Hello,

I am getting ready to buy a field monitor to use with my DVX. I wanted to know if there is a monitor out there that display the various aspect ratios such as 16x9, 2.35:1, etc. I know I can tape off the monitor for whatever ratio I want but just wanted to check to see if there is something like this out there.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Widescreen Aspect Overlays

Most of the monitors I've seen will only give you 4:3 & 16:9 (if they're switchable at all).

Now, rumaor has that if you go 16:9 and then "letterbox" that, you'll wind up with 2.35:1

Whether that's correct, and whether monitors will let you letterbox something that's already 16:9...I don't know.

Dan,
I can speak only for DV Rack. It allows you to set the Pixel Aspect Ratio for the Field Monitor from 1.000 (1:1) up to 2.400 (12:5). It also has a letterbox mask that is totally independent. Neither or these features--or any other DV Rack features for that matter--affect what's being recorded to your hard drive in any way. DV Rack records the unadulterated DV stream from the camera.

Here is a thought;

I have never tried nor used it, but can you mask off a 4:3 field monitor using 'ND' or similar material? Seems it would be convenient to be able to 'see through' the image while still maintaining the desired aspect ratio.

Re: Widescreen Aspect Overlays

You can cheat like me & use a clear photo copy overhead projector sheet and cut out the aspect from it leaving the outer frame intact & the inner area free from it. This makes the outer area slightly fuzzy. A slight marker pen to the top & bottom line gives you a nice thin line to see your intended frame edges. I made a little one for my DVX LCD for shooting super 35 over a year ago, works great. I use a small cheap TV sometimes, on it I put thin black line tape from a graphic arts store on the screen, that also worked great. I'm told you're looking for a cage generator..... I think we all are in need of one.

good luck

Re: Widescreen Aspect Overlays

Thanks for all your help. 10s you are right, I was looking for a cage generator. A company called Blue Lucy makes one but it looks like it will be too much for me to purchase. I think I am going to use the overhead projector method. I think that will work well and cheaply.

Again thanks for all the help.
