Wide Angle Lenses

Two questions:

Are the "cheap" adapters ("Digital Optics") so awful that I should avoid them even if they are 1/3 the price of the Century lenses?

What's all this about bayonet mounts? What bayonet mount? All I see is a screw thread. Unless they mean the bayonet the sunscreen uses...in which case, what happens to the sunscreen?

Re: Wide Angle Lenses

I am waiting delivery of the Collinscraft Red Eye 0.5x. It's screw mount (like century). I'll post my impressions

It's all a matter of priorities. What's more important -- image quality, or cheap price? (and with judicious ebay shopping you can get those "digital optics" lenses for 1/6 the cost of the Century .6).

Yes, the sunshade uses the bayonet mount, and that's how the Century lenses attach. You take the sunshade off when using a Century lens.

? Century's are all bayonet-mount. Is the Red Eye bayonet mount? I've heard good things about it, but never seen one...

Well...for now, I really don't expect to have the resultant videos shown anywhere other than on someone's computer at 320x240, or possibily at the full "natural" size. Certainly no film transfers for the big screen.

I guess what I'd like to know is if the lesser quality would be objectionable (or even noticeable) under those circumstances.

Re: Wide Angle Lenses

All of these cheap lenses will seriously compromise the quality of your picture. The Leica lens on the camera is a high quality lens and is responsible for such a great picture on your camera. Put something cheap in front of it and it's like trying to get a sharp shot through a dirty window.

Take it from me, stay away from these lenses, I learned it the hard way a while back and it is my mission to make sure you guys don't make the same mistake.

Well. OK, then. What the heck...I'm single, no dependents except for two cats. And that's what VISA cards are for, right? :-)

Re: Wide Angle Lenses

Don't forget you will aways have a buyer if you buy a good brand. Lesser knowns have pretty much ZERO chance of resale.

My guess is that unless they stop making the DVX or a 72mm camera of similar, your lenses will depreciate much slower than the camera itself.

That assumes I get rid of things. You haven't seen the three rooms in my apartment that cannot be used because of...um...stuff. ;D

Someday I will learn to play the saxophone, wire up the 6 TRS patch bays, fix the Atari ST, throw away the Hukapoo shirts from 1974, buy some film for the SpeedGraphic, see if the Tascan reel-to-reel still works, transfer the 8-tracks to CD, finish reading Anais Niin's diaries...

Re: Wide Angle Lenses

If you really have all that stuff, you may find it easy to lose your WA, although it is a big piece of glass.

I'm no one to talk however, as my "studio" is no glam pad. Figure out where you want to spend money and why...

Re: Wide Angle Lenses

Oh, yeah...I have all that stuff. And that's just off the top of my head...there are probably bits and pieces of treasure buried in those rooms, but they're too hard to search.

The WA will end up in one of the 6 aluminum cases I have lying around, as soon as I find some foam rubber to fit them.

I'll go with the Century. That and a fluid head are my next purchases.

Sooner or later I will get around to actually using the camera, too. ;)
