Wide Angle Lens Confusion

A long time ago I had a small wide angle 0.42x lens for a small camcorder.

Now I have the DVX100A. I got a wide angle 0.45x lens for that camera. So the physical size of the 0.45x lens for the DVX is larger than the 0.42x lens for the old, smaller camera.

But should there be a significant difference in the field of view between the two? I took sample images and you can see how MUCH LESS wide the 0.45x is compared to the 0.42x lens.

So... can anyone please tell me what is going on? I have on friend who could only give me a hint of advice, which is this:

"It's the same when you change from film SLRs to Digital SLR's.

There's a difference in the MM, and I'm not sure what it is with your camera, but you can find it out online.

It's these crazy mathmatical conversion thing... and I'm not sure how to explain it, but I understand it. "

I have not been able to find anything online like she mentioned, so I was hoping someone here could help.

Thanks so much.

im not really sure what your trying to say...... but the lower the number the more the lense will see. and the .42 is wider but it loooks so much more wider than the .45 because the vig ( black circles) is showing. zooom through the vig until it is matched with the .45x vig and you will see that its not much wider

What I meant was - when I used my older camera with a smaller lens (48mm), and put on the 0.42x wide angle on it, the image was MUCH wider than what I saw when using the 0.45x wide angle on my DVX100 lens (72mm).

I guess a better example would be to post a still taken from the older camera's footage and compare it to the DVX100.

It also depends on the size of the CCD sensor in the cameras, and/or how wideangle the built-in lens of the old camera was.

Posting a still of the older camera's footage with and without the wide angle adapters should clear up what's happening.
