Wide angle adapter question

It feels kind of dumb but how can I know if I don't ask.

A wide angle adapter performs as part of the lens when mounted, right? Meaning, you won't get shallower DoF by using an adapter and zooming in. You would get the DoF of whatever focal lenght the lens has now become... right?

What up Roberto? as far a i know W/A adapters don't increase or decrease your dof. if anything they might increase it just because your widening your angle of view. i know when using the Schneider .6x and .75x adapters with my EX1 everything within 30 feet seems to be in focus. as a matter of fact i don't even think you can rack focus with the .6x on. i mean you can rack, but nothing changes the dof or focal distance within the frame. i'm not 100% sure though.

Roberto:

When I use the Schneider .06 on my 170, the camera automatically focuses to macro, because it is using a virtual image from the WA adapter. Pretty much everything will be in focus from the camera to infinity. You will have much deeper, not shallower depth of field over the stock lens because the field of view is so much wider.

Really?! WOw... o_0

I never thought this would be the case. So the focus ring is useless?

I thought the FOV would change and that's it, and I thought I might be able to get a little more by being able to get closer to the subject for the same frame...

BTW, I am now only concerned with the 0.75x or 0.7x from 16x9 after seeing the distortion that the 0.6x from Century adds to the image.

i believe Century/Schneider makes a .75x that's zoom through. i know its compatible with the EX cameras. not sure if they make one for other bodies.

They do make one or they have the step up/down rings for almost all cameras.

Does zoom through mean you can focus then?

Does zoom through mean you can focus then?

i would assume so because you would loose considerable amount of dof when zooming to the end of your lens. focusing with the .6x is like trying to be selective at a Playboy Mansion party. you're gonna get the same thing no matter what you do.

Lol... STDs? :) Yea, I thought the same... zoom though is a must in this case. So I was thinking that maybe you could zoom in all the way and get closer thanks to the wide angle therefore get a stronger bokeh.

I recently learned that wide angle ADAPTERS are usually not zoom-through. The zoom-through types are called CONVERTERS.

Thanks for the clarification!

Funny thing is I just got this in my e-mail:

I didn't know they had these "longer" pieces... they all say Converter too! :)

Wonder if there are any samples anywhere? They look like they might be a great alternative to the 16x9's
