Wide-Angle Adapter Numbers

Here's a noobish-type question regarding wide-angle adapters...

...specifically what do the numbers (.5x, .7x, etc) describing wide-angle adapters mean, in terms of the type of lens they allow me to simulate by shooting through them?

That is, if I wanted to figure out how to simulate, say, a 12mm lens, or a 15mm lens, how would I tell from the adapter description which adapter, and what setting on the DVX's lens, I would put together to get the desired focal length?

Didn't find anything by searching, so I'm hoping one of the resident expert-type guys will help me out, here...

The .5x and .7x terms are "factors" that you would multiply the focal length by to obtain the "new" focal length. So if you had a 12mm lens, it would be the equivalent of a 6mm one with a wide angle adapter with a factor of .5x

(12mm * .5 = 6mm)
