Why would anyone want one of these P2 cards?

That isn't a P2 card, in the sense that it doesn't actually record footage onto it. What it is, is an external computer processor that adds the ability to record low-res mpeg-4 proxy files, simultaneously with the full-res files. So if your editing or archiving workflow demanded that you have little 320x240 (or whatever) MPEG-4 proxy files, that card would let you create them automatically. The proxies can even be saved on SD cards so you could distribute those to a logger or someone, or when you archive you could keep the low-rez proxies on your local system and archive the big full-rez files out to deep storage, so when you search the metadata to find a particular shot you could have a low-rez proxy online to verify that that was, indeed, the shot you wanted.

The proxy card doesn't work in the handheld cameras (HVX/HPX170) and I don't think it'll work in an HPX500, but it works in the 300/370 and all the AJ cameras (2000,2700,3000,3700).

I've heard that Fox News uses the proxy & SD cards so reporters / producers can log / edit easier out in the field.

The proxy files can also be handy for immediate upload from the field, if there's a breaking story that just can't wait. They're not HD, they're about VHS-quality, but if the news is important enough they'd be happy to get a file of that quality and it can be uploaded very quickly.

Yeah same.

They're not HD, they're about VHS-quality,

Oh I hope not that bad. Downres to 240lines I'd take as a viewer for breaking news, but if I started seeing the reds ozzing all over the place I think I'd change the channel & wonder how much of the card's processing power was used to water down the chroma. :-p

Well, yeah, that's what I meant -- VHS res, not VHS quality. Obviously as a component digital format it's not gonna have all the horrible smearing colors etc! :)
