Sorry to bother. I just got a new MacBookPro. My old G4 I had for years so I'm not sure if there was a certain setting I enabled years ago.
In the past whenever I drag a clip into my timeline I would get a message that said something like "sequence settings do not match the clip, would you like to change sequence settings to match the clip".
It was very easy that way, I could drag in anything and then click okay and my sequence is all set (no rendering required).
It's very weird now that I did a fresh install of FCP in my MBP. When I drag a clip in an new and fresh timeline I get a red bar asking me to render all that footage. I've searched everywhere and can't find how to make it be like my old system.
