Why what you shoot on is not as important as you think

"When I saw, they recorded it on a Atomos Ninja, that's where it starts getting fishy".

But no Arri footage

We all take as much kit as the budget will allow to get those killer shots, I find it pretty impressive a camera on a smartphone can do this.

Every camera manufacturer will try to impress using every bit of kit available to show off how good their cam is. I dont see GoPro just putting a hero3+ on a wall and going "there you go, its a small camera and shoots good stuff".

They'll put it on a skateboarder, a firefighter or a down hill mountain biker. Pretty the exact opposite of an iPhone strapped to a dolly and recording to an external device. ;)

Exactly...but the thing is they will use the advantages of its size and image quality to get those killer shots showing "hey this is what a Go Pro can do". I have also seen GoPros strapped to helicopters / aircraft etc hardly a cheap platform to get the shot.

What can you do wiht an Iphone and a 2 million dollar budget versus what Joe from Film School does with an Arri and 50 bucks doesn't really show or test anything except the fact that it doesn't hurt to have a decent budget.

That being said I do like the new Iphone and will probably get one.

I think what we can all agree on here is that THIS IS GOOD MARKETING! And really I think that's kind of what Apple was going for... it's pretty cool.

Yeah a lot of people wont think about all the crew and gear that ALSO went into this, but they'll realize it quickly enough when they go and try and make a similar video on their iPhone.

I have yet to turn up to a factory or workplace to be met by the entire staff breaking into a spectacular dance routine with their tablets (microsoft surface) or watch 4x4 owners complain under warranty they were promised jungle treks and mountainous off roading in the adverts that did not materialise on the school run.
Rest assured when Samsung (who make excellent products) show what their camera or tablet can do image wise the shots are carefully planned there, will be art direction and the beautiful people will be associated with the product.

So why does the Apple outrage bus appear when Apple wheel out an advert.

My wife used her new iPhone to shoot our new puppy arriving at the airport last night. Good thing it took a little while for him to be brought out, as my wife couldn't figure out how to switch the iPhone from stills to video mode, or which way to hold the iPhone, or how to not get her fingers in the shot. Now there's your commercial…. Technology in the hands of the non-technological, No don't you do it, just tell me how to do it, a typical husband and wife, shot in a single day.

I didn't mean to set off a firestorm of controversy. Just thought it was pretty amazing that something that looks that good could be shot on a phone- regardless of recording device, the hands it's in, or size of crew. It's still a phone! Should be inspiring- if that can be done with a phone, what should we able to do with real kit?

I'm with you! I see how people can feel devalued if people think all their fancy gear is worthless, but I doubt most people ACTUALLY think that, and like David pointed out all it takes is a minute of two of trying to produce something on your own to see the difference. In any case, it's incredible to me... it wasn't long ago that this board was formed and everyone was stoked on the DVX100. And now we have a camera, that while very limited in many respects, has specs that no one would have dreamed of fitting into your pocket 10 years ago. Full HD, 120fps Slow motion, insane burst mode, editing and online publishing software on device, etc. The ability, fancy rigs and crew or not, to shoot what we just saw in that advert...? That's pretty phenomenal on a merely technological level.

Where will be in another 10 years? Mind = blown.
