Why Video?

the topic is 'why video' not 'why filmmaking', and to that I answer: because it's cheaper and easier than film.

Actually, the topic was this:

I am curious to know why you are interested in video. What is it about it that appeals to you? What do you use it for?

In looking back, i see that most of my working days in all my careers are spent working with video. I'm wondering where you think it has a place in society. Where you think it is going.

Thanks

So there is a definate "filmaking" aspect to it. Storytelling, bringing ideas to life, not just the medium, but what, why, and how we got into that. Filmmaking is not limited to "film" based media. Look at how many people have created "Films" that were shot with video.

Film/television is by far the most influential form of media in todays world. Not as many people read books, or magazines, or listen to the radio. You can't form movements for climate change through books alone, you can't educate individuals about smoking, aids, world hunger, simply through newspapers. You won't reach enough of an audience.

For me, it's all about the change.

I began as many others did, by writting stories. I love narrative stories, and even classic holywood style films. But the more I get into film, and the more I notice it's power to influence.

When you hold a camera in your hand, it's not just holding a recording device, it's power. It's a power of getting voices not just heard by 5 people on the street, but rather a possibility of thousands of people or more around the world.

I love documentaries, but my heart is with Narrative. I want to tell stories that influence and inform, while entertaining at the same time. Perhaps retelling important events that have an impact in todays world. I also love to tell stories of course.

As for audiences. Why would you make it only for yourself (unless it's a home video)? Film/television's whole design as a media form is to be viewed by an audience. Without an audience, I don't see film/television existing as media.
