why vegas not considered professional

Noone know about it. Most professional post houses run MAC, so either ethey run FCP or AVID on Mac.

They just dont have exposure to it.

When they learn about it, they usually think its really cool, but its just not compatible for transferring footage across different work stations. Smoke, Flame, DAvinci ETC....

Though Vegas is amazing for people who are self contained work shops. It has amazing Audio capabilities, CC is quite good, and its so damn willingly compatible with different formats.... ( i still use Vegas 5 if Vegas 8 Pro ever gets twitchy or whiny about a weird codec)

Probably because Vegas has a smaller market share than FCPro.

You have to look into what kind of market you are in.

If you want to primarily freelance edit for other people, learn Avid and FCPro and you'll be set.

If you are cutting your own stuff, who cares what you edit on.

They are only tools.

It's limitations are what make it unusable in most professional settings. I could never bill on it what I bill on my Avid but I can't do 5.1 surround on my Avid. Go figure.
As it grows it will be used more. We see FCP in many post houses and some of these even sport Premiere behind the scenes. In the end, it's not about what the buttons do but how marketable the room is the client.

It's smart. Vegas 8 is by far the most buggy and least stable build ever, and about three times this week I've considered kicking it to the curb altogether and going back to 7.

If only we could get it away from frickin' Sony. If only. Siiiiiigh.

I think there is “Professional” in the sense of standard tools and there is “Pro” in the sense of what are most paid pros using.

I think Vegas is a professional level NLE - no doubt.
I use it and get paid using it but I am the odd man out because most people I know in graphic arts and video production are FCP users.

I do know if I wanted to go to work for someone else, Final Cut [more than Avid] is what I'd need to know based on the people i know.

I work on my own both in my department and freelance so I get to use whatever I want.

Vegas 9 Pro is what I really want to see if/when it comes out.

Will Vegas ever be used on the same level as Avid and Final Cut?
I don't think so.
I couild be if Sony got behind it like they get behind their cameras.

I love and use Vegas 8, but I have to agree about the bugginess. Not with 8.0 as installed out of the box, but when I installed their update version (8b or 8c something like that), my system became very unstable and would freeze up, etc. I reinstalled the 8a or whatever version was on the CD out of the box and it runs extremely stable (I did HD renders for two weeks straight including two instances of Vegas at a time and never shutting off the power).

I agree, in the sense that it can do anything any other program can do -- and often better -- internally.

But if you ever want to collaborate with someone who's not using Vegas or an SCS product (Sound Forge, ACID, etc.), you are screwed in so many ways.

Even something as simple as a basic EDL is out of the question.

(Just discovered last night, for example, that V8/Raylight will not open an MXF or a Raylight AVI created by Adobe Media Encoder (even though everything else will, including P2 Viewer and the HVx200 itself) . . . instant CRASH! So, the ability to work cross-platform on my current project is probably fatally flawed.)

Actually, part of the problem is that they DO get behind it like they do their cameras -- to them, nothing but Sony matters, and they want you to do everything the Sony way.

Which is a crying, awful shame, considering it always had the potential to obliterate everyone else.

Vegas 5 was the last rock-solid, indestructible build. Nothing could crash it.

Vegas 6 had a couple of tiny bugs out of the gate, but it was fixed quickly.

Vegas 7 added some neat new features, but it began the slide toward bugginess.

Vegas 8 has been very buggy (comparatively).

That is really interesting. I am new to Vegas 8.0 pro, and was just doing some playing around with my first clips last night - AVCHD from the HMC150. The program froze up 3 times in half an hour, and I had to kill in and restart. My intended flow is to use Vaast Gearshift anyway, so hopefully once I get going on a real project, working with the low-res clips, it should be more stable. But, it does make me wonder if I made the right choice...

Chris.

I can't decide.

I can't decide.

I bought and use 8.1 with Vista and I can't count how many times I've had it freeze up. I'm in the habit of saving ever other second because I can't seem to figure a way to have auto save happen in shorter intervals. Every 5 minutes isn't enough for me. I get a lot done in 5 minutes. I open video in the trimmer and it's freezing just about every other time. I got to get it back on track, if possible. It just isn't helpful when on a deadline.

8.0 doesn't like AVCHD. I never saw any freezing in it til I used AVCHD files. Using Cineformed files, runs flawlessly.

David how about sending us a bug report on that one, with samples. It sounds fixable. Did it work with V7/Raylight? Are you using Ultra?

Any updates on this bugginess?
My Vegas 8c, MediaPlayer11 and/or Explorer all crash anytime I open an .avi from raylight Ultra (converted HMC-150 footage). The vid will usually play a few seconds before crashing, but if paused before the crash and cursor is relocated to different part of clip it will play another few seconds before crashing. AND - Explorer sometimes crashes if I only SELECT one of those files. Whats up with that?
OR - what am I doing wrong?

(System Core2 duo, 3gigs, XP,)

this could drive me crazy - unfortunately that is quite a short drive...

Certainly worth finding out whether version 9 is better - presumably the free trial version would be enough to test with?

But since MediaPlayer and Explorer have the same problem, I'd suspect there's something dodgy about the raylight Ultra output...

I LOVE ME SOME VEGAS!!!!
I stopped trying to convince people about how good it is, people are just wired to be prejudiced, about ANYTHING you know. It's weird cause if my friends are impressed by something I do on Vegas I know they are thinking "Dude if he can do that in Vegas, imagine what I could do in Final Cut!" LOL, it's ok, they know I think they're a bunch of 'tards anyway.

BTW I have no probs with AVCHD (Canon and some other small cams, not HMC150) or P2/Raylight in 8.0c and I use it on 32bit versions of XP, Vista and Windows7 RC.

The bug report from David was for MXF's and AVI's made from Adobe Media Encoder, not Raylight Ultra (RayMaker). Were you using Adobe ME? If not his problem might not be the same as yours.

If you are having problems with Ultra please submit a bug report with sample clips to DVFilm Support. Posting to this forum unfortunately does not provide us enough information, and in general we don't do support work through forums.
