Why the lockouts?

Ok, I know we discussed this last week...but I honestly have no clue why the moderators shut down the political thread today.

For lack of a better word, the most "heated" part of that debate was probably between Scott and I.  I said nothing offensive towards him, he said nothing offensive towards me.  I can't speak for Scott, but I personally am not mad at him...and I would presume he is all that mad at me.  We were just having a friendly debate...as I was with everyone I disagreed with on that board (which is many).

When things get shut down under the circumstances of that thread, I just have to feel like I'm in the first grade again.

I would hate it if some higher power shut down the political debates between our presidential candidates in fear of becoming too controversial, or hurting someone's feelings, or it by chance having the remote possibility of becoming out of hand.

Let's cut out this ridiculousness and allow people to speak freely as long as they are being mature.  And if you have a problem with this stuff being posted in the Cafe then change the description!!!

Re: Why the lockouts?

For an example of why we get skittery about it, go look at IndieClub.com.  That was a great board full of helpful members in all manner of film-related disciplines.  They recently implemented a "coffee house" cafe-type place for off-topic discussions, and now the board is imploding.  It's sad to see, it was a fine resource but now it's just full of personal sniping and griping and whining.

Threads like that can't stay contained.  They're like fire -- they spread.

We've had our experience with these types of threads, and frankly we mods all agreed that if you want to talk about politics or other things, you're certainly free to: there are millions of discussion groups out there for that type of thing.  Let's just not have it here, because it rarely has *anything* to do with promoting the core goals of this board, and *invariably* leads to dissension, disagreement, name-calling, etc.

So why even start it up?

And you may have a point: I'll petition Jarred to see if he wants to change the Cafe's description to include something like "except politics".  When it comes right down to it, this is Jarred's board and he makes the rules, he can override all the mods if he chooses, so we look to him make the decisions.

Re: Why the lockouts?

Well, I'm not a big fan of censorship, but as long as things are consistant, I'm ok with it. I've seen the problems at Indieclub.com and scratch my head over it. I enjoy debating things at times and politics comes up from time to time. As long as it stays about politics, things are ok, but it if gets personal, that's a bad things. I think people have to remember that this and other boards are just little chat areas and not some great faunt of knowledge about the world (although there's some great knowledge about film and video making here). People need to chill out and not take themselves so seriously. I think that's what didn't happen on Indieclub.

Take care all.

Scott
