Why the downer on the 1D C?

+external recorder...
4K RAW it wont be cheap...
Well, Shane Hurlbut says on 4K 8-bit 4:2:2 MJPEG in his twitter as far as 1D/C IQ concerns that the «nearest competitor to the image and I would say half of the quality is 80k» !!

;-)

Yea, that was my thinking, I imagine at least $5k for the RAW recorder... this year, at least.

I missed one too, the Sony FS700, but who knows when 4K will be available, so not worth including.

It will be more than that unless BD puts anything outside in the meantime, earlier than the next version of their 12-bit RAW capture device : ) Quite probably only next year.

$6k for the current (1080p) Gemini. Codex costs much higher.

FS700 has no genlock.

Isn't the new Aja under 5k... not sure about the... gee too many model names and numbers... but someone posted under the first C500 footage.. the Codex one I have no clue on... just a guess but I figure Canon would want them to keep them around 5k... just a guess...

It is MSRP $3,995 but it is not as small factor as the Gemini.

main reason people dont like it is high expectations. they were expecting the ultimate camera FF 12 bit ucompressed 4k lossless codec with free lollipop for $1000

Hopefully BM or Atomos come out with a cheap solution.

It sounds like the Sony RAW capture will be a proprietary device.... So I expect big prices.

...Competition will cure Canon's Indie pricing problem, so give it a year or so and things might look quite different.

I wa expecting a camera derived from the 1DX to be in 1DX teritory as far as pricing.

Will be looking at the BMCC instead.

ink the C500 is probably going to be a good renting success , the other canon options are much more suspicious to me and Canon have no excuse.

I wish one of the tech blogs would buy a 1D C & Scarlet to do a tear-down. Red has suggested that a Scarlet costs significantly more to build than similarly-priced competing products, and I'd like to know if it's true.

there is difference in price ...canon use in house made parts and red need to buy lot of stuff from third parties ...
1dc is essentially same as 1dx and it can be built on assembly line but red is more hand made ...1dC share R&D cost with rest of canon cameras but with RED is only EPIC and SCARLET....

It seems many people here feel that the 1D C camera will be a flop. Leave apart big productions, even productions that are shot at 1080p, a number of them while filming with the C300 will just rent the 1D C for the slow motion work. They should intercut well.

I feel the 15k estimated price tag, will come down a bit when the 1D C is launched. There will be many creative uses of the 1D C.

CANON is testing brand loyalty to the max ....
they use all that free marketing delivered by DSLR users to sell their products for crazy high prices...
and of course they fail same as SONY did..... but thats good ,after that they gives as what we want for reasonable
price....
so be patient dont do any free marketing and u see price drop...

When Canon starts with 22 or 16MP chips in $3,000 or $6,000 cameras, 4k does not sound like a difficult hurdle from a sensor point of view. Sort of like not delivering 1000 line 1080p in the 5DMKIII. We know they can do it for relatively low cost, but obviously "we" are not their intended audience.

I guess I misspoke...I know the difference exists, I meant it'd be great to know exactly how big it is because that tells us exactly how greedy and unethical Canon is.
