Why the downer on the 1D C?

Right now I'd settle for a few great actors and an iphone

A great script wouldn't hurt either. Otherwise, we will have pretty pictures with no engaging story behind it.

For me, I have all the tools I need to tell an interesting story at low cost. I don't believe the perceived higher quality you get with Red or Canon's cameras are worth it to me. The BM camera is very interesting and am eager to see the final image once the camera is fully completed.

Got all the tools, got the great script, got an amazing lead actress, got the money to shoot a 15min short teaser based on the feature script, but I'm struggling to find a great cast.....I'm going to put off shooting until July....If I can't get great performances I might as well shoot charts.....they cost a lot less to feed and they don't try to self direct!

Since the 1DC can handle the high data rates that it uses to record 4K 24fps... I wonder why they didn't add some of the super slow-motion bursts like what Sony did with the FS700 , that'd be really nice to have :)

What really confuses me about this camera is the 4:2:0 1080p codec. Why???? They have already implemented the 4:2:2 codec for 4K.

Maybe it was to protect the C300.... But I can't see the C300 crowd caring much what a DSLR offers... The whole point of the C300 is that it has all the good points of the DSLR craze but in a proper video camera with a beautiful sensor.

Go charts! : D

8-bit 4:2:2 MJPEG vs. 4:2:0 h.264 MPEG4

That means nothing to me... I'm not technical.

I imagine mjpeg 4:2:2 at the high rates this camera can do would beat 4:2:0 h264 though... I know mp4 is an old codec, but surely it is pretty good at high datarates (otherwise, surely the 4K is awful?)

No ND filters, no peaking, no XLR, no 25P @ 4K - lacking these features would be okay if it was around $6K, hell, even $8K - but at $15K, it's a joke. That's why people are down on the 1DC.

It is overpriced, yes. And they will need to introduce another lower version when Nikon will reach 4K.

25p will probably come as firmware update. But 24p makes sense, it is a cinema DSLR. You can go to 25p through post anyway. It is the way we've seen all the blockbusters on TV for decades. Street lights or displays flickering during shooting you avoid setting the shutter speed on 1/50.

While I think everyone took Hurlbut's comments with a pinch of salt, he is probably saying that the 1DC 'crushes' the Alexa or Epic when you take all of the various positive factors into account (not just the image but also the following features that would be considered useful to DOPs already used to working with the DSLR workflow):

1) The 1DC is small, and easily mounted in difficult locations
2) It is very discrete (especially for filming in public places)
3) It'll work with all your existing DSLR rigs and accessories
4) It is 4k (to the Alexas 2K)
5) It uses affordable generic media (not expensive proprietary media that some 4K cameras over charge on)
6) It uses Canon batteries which tend to be inexpensive and long lived (as opposed to the overly expensive short lived batteries used by some 4K cameras)
7) Power consumption should be pretty low (again some 4K cameras seems to run out of power while you're blackshading them)
8) It appears to be pretty silent (compared to some of the Jet Engines hidden in other 4K cameras)
9) Seems to be pretty rugged and relatively weather sealed
10) Canons tend to be pretty reliable
11) Not as much data wrangling as in a RAW workflow (?)

So thats not to say that the image alone will crush an Alexa or Epic, but under certain circumstances when you weigh all the pros and cons you have another option to look at when renting, specific to your requirements on the day. Ons some day you might find the 1DC meets those requirements better than others.

I certainly could not afford it, but it really looks like a useful tool for certain jobs.

Very good post Greamsay!

But you have to realize that most people here are not professional shooters and being students or amateurs in the field, most feel that the most you can get the better, like Raw capture and 16bit files, all for under 3k...

I also think this camera along with the C500, C300 and the Scarlet are the best and most affordable digital film cameras on the market. Affordable in terms of a production, not a single 'home' user. Cameras like the BM are mass market cameras, not professional capable cameras, but only people that get paid to shoot and work collectively on with film crew will actually understand this...

Shane Hurlbut being overly excited, made some very silly comments when talking about this camera, but I understand his enthusiasm, as this camera's image is actually quite astonishing.

I got not far past this point in this thread and found your comments offensive and inaccurate. There are without any doubt a very very large number of members of this group who are professional shooters, directors of photography, editors, audio pros and producers and directors... look around and you will see. There are many American members who have been honoured by the industry with Emmy Awards, Canadians who hold Gemini and international awards for their work. And your comments about another member are way out of line.
