Why only 12dB??

Really just out of curiousity (and annoyance), but is there a particular reason you can only up the audio level to +12 decibels?

I understand it's going to start adding artifacts/noise... but for people like me who edit events (weddings in particular), and my shooters constantly lag in adjusting levels for the scene, it's a pain in the arse to have to export the audio, bring it into a seperate program (I use PEAK), bring up the level>export back, etc, etc, etc...

Is there an easier way to do this in FCP itself?

what is the significance of the number 12?

You can clone the track (i.e. double it up). I've done that a couple of times when I need more volume than Final Cut will give me.
